What do the numbers listed for each civ on the Diplomacy screen mean?

I'm sure this has been addressed many times already, but I can't find it so here goes.

On the diplomacy screen listing for the civilizations you've met, there's a number. It appears next to the symbol for their civilization. What is it? Their score? Is it of any practical value?

The score? Your pop, tech, SP, military, wonders, and who knows what else all have numerical values that add up to that number which is used to determine a winner in a turn limit victory. Which happens in 2050. Which I turn off because I dont like having an artificial this is when the game ends date.
