What do you use your first great leader for?

I've been playing Civ3 (a lot) for about 5-6 months, and have never yet seen a leader created (at least, not one of mine).
If I ever get one - and I somehow doubt that I will - I'll let you know what I use it for...

Before anyone says anything: yes, I DO know how to get a leader and I HAVE been following the "approved" course of action. But still no leaders...

Take it from me, someone with issues with Civ 3, this is not a problem with the game, and I have listed almost a hundred problems already.

Leaders DO appear at about 1:15 ratio of Elite unit attacks.

Just keep as many Elite units as possible, and use them as often as possible and safely. For instance, let a veteran unit knock off some hit points and finish off a town with an Elite. Don't upgrade Elites too quickly as they revert to veterans. USE YOUR ELITES.

And don't waste your time building armies; build Wonders.
