I'm an old Civ 2 guy. I have to say that Civ 3 was a huge, crushing disappointment at first. So many wonderful additions, yet so many stupid, stupid steps backward.

Part of my problem was not getting into a Civ 3 mindset. I've solved that problem. Another was the corruption. I've lowered the costs for courthouses and the Forbidden Palace. And naval units are still undervalued. I've added 2 MPs for every naval unit. And I made submarines cheaper and stronger in the attack. (I found a real use for them in Civ 2. Many coastal cities don't have the production to build battleships in a timely manner, so I'd have them crank out subs. I'd pair a sub with a battleship, and then have the sub attack a battleship. The sub would lose, but it would do enough damage that my battleship could then finish off the other battleship. With their attack value in C3, they're useless.)

I haven't downloaded any patches, because when I came on here, people were close to unanimous that the then-current patch was worse than the original game.

Anyway, I want to hear what ideas you guys have put into your games to make them better.

The latest patch is worth it - much tastier in my opinion, and solves a lot of bugs. The AI also seems to expand slower at the start, making for a slightly less frantic opening to the game. I don't know why people thought that any patches prior to 1.17 were so good.

Not being nasty, but I'd ignore everyone here as far as altering specific values goes, and just go with your feelings. Everyone has their own thoughts on this game. Just make sure you use the latest patch. I really didn't like Civ2, and so I ignore anyone giving out advice on bringing back Civ2 unit values, aircraft rules, etc.

The only things I change are corruption, and AI trade values. The AI is a bit odd, but then so has the AI in every Civ game.

I'd also look at making settlers a little more expensive.

1.21 is a must have improvement for the game. Check later this week for 1.29 too.

Congratulations. Welcome to Civ3! I wonder why some people want to pay $70 for the exact same game they already have.

I play with the Player1 mod, which makes a lot of subtle improvements that add up to a much better playing experience. Look for it and other mods in the Completed Modpacks section of CivFanatics. Or just scan them for ideas.

I also prefer to keep corruption in the game. It is a great challenge and an additional consideration for the strategy game Civ3 is.
