What exactly does x2 defence vs horse mean?

What exactly does "x2 on defence versus horse" mean?

More specifically, what defines a horse?

Is it the spesific unit slots or the 2 space movement?

off the top of my head....

anything with move 2 OR MORE
and some say the unit must have HP of 1, you need to test this as I always use HP of 1 for my units.

There was a suggestion in Techumseh's 'Operation Market Garden' thread over at SLeague that the pikeman ability is useless against move-2 units in slots other than that of the original horseman IIRC

I'm quite certain that my answer came from an article posted here about the Combat Formula. You chould find it somewhere on the main site.

I did a quick test with Knights vs Pikemen. 20 of each, Veteran pike, non vet Knights, Pikes on non-defense terrain, not fortified, no other defensive bonus.

First test was Statndard Knight vs the Vet Pike.
Second test was using the same saved file, just that the rules.txt were editied to give each unit 2 hp.
Third test was 3 movement given to Knights, all else standard.
Fourth test was FP of 2 for both, all else standard.
Results are for the Pikemen.

The 2 FP results are as lop-sidded as the 2 HP and 3 Movement ones are but they are quite a bit different. I'd say that the idea that the unit needs to be a 2 movement, 1HP, 1FP unit seems correct.

Yes indeed, damn that limits the usefullness of that flag..... :p

I know it doesn't double defence though (1/3 defence bonus or something).

I was always under the impression that the flag didn't work at all. (I've tried it using the standard rules and similar units and the effects were the same even when the flag was unchecked for the defender. If there was a difference it certainly wasn't a noticable one.

A couple of years back, several whizzes worked out the combat formula for Civ2. So with a lot of help from SlowThinker, I made an Excel program to calculate odds. Think it can still be found here: Boco's Apolyton Upload.

At the time, the testers decided that the bonus was 1.5, and only worked for 1hp, 2mf units. IIRC, someone (M de Sodaq?) indicated that the bonus applied if the fp>2. DoM's results, however, suggest that the piker bonus does indeed require fp=1.

In DoM's tests, the calculator comes up with the following:
Test 1: 4a,1h,1f vs 4.5d,1h,1f -> 43% chance of successful attack
Test 2: 4a,2h,1f vs 3d,2h,1f -> 66% (i.e. no piker bonus)
Test 3: 4a,1h,1f vs 3d,1h,1f -> 61% (i.e. no piker bonus)
Test 4: 4a,1h,2f vs 3d,1h,2f -> 61% (i.e. no piker bonus)

It's pretty important to have a large sampling to get representative results. Those same testers often used >100 tests per condition.

I am getting several different answers here.
Who is confident with their answer?
Don't be lazy and look at Info:Combat at Apolyton (link in my signature)
(I don't know if the version of Info:Combat here in War Academy is updated.)

The main text in Info:Combat is correct, except one thing: HP factor (it is easier to test other factors because then you put hitpoints to 100 and fortuity is very low).
HP factor was solved in the thread and I don't know if Sodak (Marquis de Sodaq) updated it to the main text (in the beginning of thread).

BTW I would be interested if someone tests changed slots in rules.txt.
