To get my Civ3 to run, i need to buy a new video / sound card. Can someone suggest the best-performing / best-priced video card? do i need to get separate video and sound cards? cheers

Civ3 isn't really graphics intensive, so you luck out in that department. The largest maps run smooth as butter on this comp, which only has a 128 MB card(a Radeon 9800). Anything probably from a Radeon 9500 or newer will do. I would recommend something from the ati radeon series, but like i said, most anything will do. Best priced depends on how cheap you feel like going.

You'll need a seperate sound card. My personal recommendation(based on price/performance/reliability) would be ANYTHING from the soundblaster series from the past year and a half.

Civ 3 runs very nicely on my mate's PC. He's got a PCI TNT2 M64 card with 32Mb of RAM - hardly cutting edge by today's standards. He has an XP2200 Athlon CPU, which while fairly nippy again isn't cutting edge.

All the graphics are 2D anyway.

As for sound, anything later than a sound blaster 16. Which is 99% of what is currently available.

Seriously, any old 16 bit sound card. A 5:1 decoding card would be nice if you want to hear DVDs in surround sound, but it's not necessary for Civ 3.

EDIT: It would help a lot of you told us what sort of computer you are running on. A Macintosh? A PC? A laptop?

What sort of connectors does it have? Compare what you can see with what's on the net - check a few different sites and pictures to make sure.

Coming back with "I don't know" isn't going to get much response I regret. We're not mind readers.

Civ3 makes almost zero use of the graphics card as it is a cpu intensive game. Anything currently on the market will be enough. Do you play any other games that may require a better card?

As for the sound card, what motherboard do you have at the moment? Does it have onboard sound? If so then that will be fine for civ3.

If you don't know what cpu/mobo etc you have, try this tool:

Run it and then post a pic of each tab.
