What happens if you capture a capital?

Hypothetical setup (well, maybe not so hypothetical...): I'm Bismarck, and Joan of Arc is one neighboring rival. Let's say I've gotten fed up with Joan's insolence and decided she needs a spanking. The nearest city to the border is Orléans, which I've invested and taken over; Paris-obviously her capital-is immediately adjacent. Suppose I capture Paris (not unlikely given that I have firearms and she doesn't): does she capitulate automatically given that they're now singing Deutschland über Alles on the Champs Elysée, or do I have to systematically eliminate/capture all French units?

There is no real difference when you capture the capital as opposed to another city. Some behind the scenes things are different, like their capital relocating. But that doesn't automatically mean they give up the war, nor does it split the nation into two separate ones, like the other Civ games.

What? All I heard was "Joan" and "spanking" :mischief:

All joking aside, you don't even need to capture all the French units persay. Just take over all the cities and any units out-and-about will disappear once they find themselves homeless. Many times I will leave captured AI workers walking about to draw some of their units out of their cities, since I would rather deal with a spearman out in the open than fortified in a city (one less unit I have to kill to take the city). I also could care less if the slave workers get recaptured. The AI is less likely IME to disband re-captured naturalized workers, especially early in the game, so I can always take them back after killing off their 'savior'.

they don't automatically become part of your nation, no

there are, however, certain victory conditions in C3C that allow something like that though (well... kind of)

Regicide:eliminate the king unit
-results in the destruction of all AI cities if the King is killed (which is almost ALWAYS in the capital city where it originated)

Elimination:eliminate 'x' number of cities (x=however many it is set for)
-results in the destruction of all AI cities if the 'x' number of cities are captured/destroyed (and doesn't necessarily require conquest of the capital)

side note for both of them...
technically you don't get all the land, but they are wiped off the map completely (units, cities, everything) (this also goes same for you)

I think victory point scoring comes as another condition of yours Taras Bulba. Isn't there something about controlling a square near a capital for such a game?

Also, in mass regicide I would suspect the AIs usually have a capital there.

well... Victory point scoring can, I believe, be won without even waging war (depending upon where the victory point location is)

as for mass regicide, you must kill all (8 is default) the kings to win, which, for the AI at least, is usually the first 8 major cities built, so to win that way you must kill/capture all those cities

I really liked the risk of the AI country which lost it's captiol spliting in a civil war and form two different AI's that was in CIV 2.

I think it's the one thing I miss from civ 2 that isn't in civ 3

I can understand no civil war but it really is no penalty at all to loose your capital in civ 3, your palace teleports magically to another city, statues and all. You really should have to suffer at least a bit, but I'm sure the corruption model needs a palace as a refrence point and it probably crashes without one. I still remember selling my palace back in Civ. That was a mistake! But you could do it.

I do believe that's changeable in the startup screen where you choose your civ. There's a "Game Options" button, and I *think* you can change the number of kings there. I do know that you can change the elimination threshold to between 1 and 10. Also change the culture and domination thresholds as well. Not sure about the Mass Regicide option.

Just checked, and the Mass Regicide is not an option in the Game Limits screen.

well... if it isn't changeable, it might be 7, I don't know, I haven't played Mass Regicide in a long time

Wasnt there an addition to Conquests where taking the capital would reduce the likelihood of a culture flip I thought I remembered something along those lines.
