What is a modpack?

This may be a horribly newbie question, but what exactly is a modpack?

I'm not a total dunce...I know it's a modification to the basic game. But does it effectively rewrite my entire game? I ask because I'm interested in checking out the Warhammer modpack so that I can play the scenarios. But if I download and apply the modpack, will I always have to play the Warhammer version? Or can I move back and forth between the "regular" game and the modified Warhammer game?

Welcome to the forum!

Fear not - you won't be stuck with trolls and orcses for ever. Mods and scenarios alike go into a "Scenarios" folder within your CivIII folder and so their graphics, text etc are kept separate. You play them by going to the "Civ Content" option on the game's main menu. And you play a standard Civ game in the normal way.
