Thank you for your time

he ugly or somethin!?!?!??

Theres a big map. It has soldiers on it called units. Some of these units are called settlers and workers, and they are the most important. The others just fight.

You are the king of a civilization which owns some of these units.
If units are yours, you can move them and make them do things. Otherwise they are controlled by the computer, playing other civilizations. You can turn settlers into cities. At any given time each city can be building somethingthing, either a unit which can move around for you, or a building which enhances the capabilities of the city.
Each city has population who are not units but just people who live in the city but work on the surrounding land. You can look on the city screen to adjust which square of land each citizen works on. When a citizen works land , it produces shields, or manufacturing output, and food. The mix depends on the terrain the citizen is working and how it is developed. Every turn the food produced by all the citizens of a city goes to making the population higher, so there are more citizens to produce more. Every turn the shields produced by all the citizens of the city go to finishing whatever the city is trying to build at the time. When enough shields accumulate the thing comes into existence in the city and you pick what to make next. You can make settlers, to go out and make more cities, and you can make worker units to go improve terrain so it makes more food and shields. Worked terrain also makes gold, which pays for maintenance on soldiers and buildings, or else they start to disappear. Every citizen must be kept happy by making some citizens entertainers or spending money on entertainment or building troads that bring in luxury goods that are on the map. Some buildings also make citizens happy. When a majority of citizens are unhappy in a city it revolts and they stop building and start tearing things up.
You can only make buildings and units that you have the technology for, so you can go to one screen to dictate how much you spend on research and another to pick what to research.

And you can make units that fight. If you move a fighting unit into an enemy city, you take it over. If you move a unit into a square occupied by an enemy unti , they fight. Basically, the attack strenth of the attacker and the attacker and the attack strength of the defender are the odds of one each reducing the others health by one unit. Regular units can lose three points of health before they die. Once in combat the units take slugs until one dies, except fast units can retreat wounded. Bombard units and transport units also exist, but the computer doesn't use them very well because it is stupid. Also you can talk to the kings of the other civilizations and trade things, like money, technology, alliances, and resources.

Its engrossing, but in a unique way.

Wow Tholish, I had no idea what Civilization was. You explained it very nicely. I now know what I needed. I think I will buy the games.

For civ, you must have Civilization III (regular)before you can install any other.
You should try to install the Play the world expansion before Conquests.
That way you get extras! :D

Is your freind Cody really Gay?

no hes not really gay. I just said he was because he makes me mad. He's actualy kind of cool when you get to know him. I wated to see if you people thought he was ugly.
I thought you would probibly start out with civ 1 and work your way up. hmm. So I buy 3 first

pyromaster:

Civ is a game that spans all the elements in history & gives you the key to the throne so you can rewrite history. Basically you start with a tribe 3000 BC, and plant them in the soil to found your first village. You then work the land to build irrigation for city growth and roads for travel & commerce. At the same time you send out your punk warriors with their rags for clothes and crummy axe for a weapon to explore the land around you. Find something you like? Send a settler out from your village and build another village, link them by road, and share the wealth - your empire is starting to grow.

Now, in the meantime, you take a look at these loser warriors, and huts for a village and ponder what easy upgrades you could do that would drastically improve your empire - great! But you gotta research them! Invent the wheel, map making, writing, math, code of laws, gunpowder.....flight....space travel! There's nothing better then sending in Stealth Bombers to take out another races spearmen....heh.

Then there's the whole diplomacy thing where you meet your neighbors and hold either verbal exchanges for technologies, and later pacts & alliances, or physical exchanges resulting in cities falling...or burning! Don't expect some silly war either - this one is based on real world events too. Invented gunpowder, but haven't any saltpeter within your borders? Neighbor won't trade you any? :ar15: To arms! We shall take it! Or maybe the mutual protection pact you were in drew you into a major war against the world's biggest superpower. How do you win? Take out their resources, if they haven't any oil, they can't make tanks!

You'll find it's a great game, one of the best ever - no doubt. In fact, Time magazine called Civ2 the greatest game ever made in the early 90's. The next time I saw them proclaim a new greatest game was when Civ3 came out. This is a game for the ages - you'll find just as many players over 40 as you will those in their teens. Whether you play the warmonger, diplomat, isolationist, or whatever - you won't be let down.

A new release is due out soon that is supposed to include Civ3 & both expansions in one set. If you choose not to wait, then you can buy Civ3 (in the vanilla box) and the expansion Conquests (which includes the previous expansion: Play the World), to save some money.

After that, jump in these forums and talk to people. You will not learn more anywhere else. The people here are very knowledgable & welcoming to others.

Ehh...just do me a favor, huh? You ever take over London...burrrrrn it! :satan:

lol hahahahahahahah a mod edited out the first posters picture hahahahhahaha lolololololololololo hahahhahahahahahahhahahahhahahhaha

I was wondering where all the thread provocateurs went. Good name, though you may not get it again - master of fire.

Civ3 is a turn-based strategy game that generally involves more strategic thinking and intensive management more than tactical decisions.
