What is Galactic Civilizations II?

A TBS game similar to civ only in the future with planets (with tiles) for land, alien races instead of leader traits and highly customizable spaceships for units.

Have you ever played Master of Orion 2? This would be the closest comparable game that I know of.

Check out the reviews. :D

And more importantly what makes it so good?

First and foremost, Stardock's absolute dedication to their customers, IMO, no one does it better. They actively seek out input on what players want, and implement it. The support they give their games is incredible, with regular updates to the game, not only to fix the inevitable bugs, but to add new content.

Another key to what makes GC2 such a great game is that it's tailored for the single player, meaning great attention and care have been focused on the AI.

Customization features add a very unique, personal feel as well, allowing the player to make each game very different from the last.

You can get a good feel for Stardock's approach to strategy gaming by checking out the journals.

In short: one of the best TBS available and the current king of the 4X genre.

Best AI there is in TBS games.

Even on just Challenging level the AI is no slouch. One thing it did well in my last game was adapt to my military tech. I researched beam weapons and shields first and cleaned the clock of the first 2 AI's I was at war with. By that time my next two closest neighbors started adapting by adding shield defenses and switching to missles for offense. So I started building up missles myself as well as the defense to them and cleaned the clock of the next two AI's. When I got to the last two they started going for mass drivers so I needed to get some ships with defenses against that. But they weren't ramping up missle defense too well so when I got large hulled ships I created a mega missle cruiser which had a 12 attack via serveral Harpoon missles and man that thing in a fleet with my Laser Fly Frigates or several Heavy Scorpion Fighters and I had a combo that couldn't be beat.

So while I obviously countered the AI move for move there were times I could have been in big trouble and I did lose quite a few fleets before I'd get my ships retrofitted with the new technology to best cope with the AI. And that presents a challenge that none of the Civ games have ever done.

Man I love this game. :goodjob:

Having never played any of the MOO games or GalCiv1 I'm still very tempted to get this game, even though I hardly buy any PC games (last one was Civ4, before that it was a very long time ago). Everything I've read looks great, and I haven't seen anything bad about it yet.

What's most tempted me is the focus on making a good AI to play against, that can adapt to what you're doing, and hopefully is better at fighting wars than the AI in any of the Civs

Now if only I could make all that uni coursework disappear:mischief:
