I was playing CIV3 last night when I saw a strange thing. I'm playing as the Persians and the Germans captured one of my cities. When their units moved into my city, I saw a unit that kind of looked like a King move in with them. When I moved in to re-capture the city, I killed his units and the "King" figure didn't even put up a fight. I then re-took the city. Does anyone know what this unit is??

Maybe a Great Leader? A GL has no defense... Or maybe it has been used for something, in that fallen city.

Hmm. If it was a Great Leader then you were very lucky to kill it :D

The AI was stupid to leave it in the city rather than pull it back to safety. GL's are very useful, you should check out what they can do and when you can get them. When you get one make sure not to leave it near the enemy!

I kind of thought that's what it was, but I wasn't sure. Aren't they created when an elite Civ-specific unit wins a battle? The Germans attacked me, but I know they didn't attack with a Panzer.

Yeah - IIRC, a non-elite unit has a 1 in 4 chance of getting promoted. An elite unit has a 1 in 12(? may be 1 in 16) chance of generating a Leader.

Being militaristic increases your chances of both, and building the Heroic Epic small wonder increases the chances of getting a Leader from an elite.

When you have one, you can either build an army (button at bottom of screen), or rush production (good for rushing wonders). Once you have an army other small wonders can be built, so some people often use their first leader for an army.

You can also have only 1 leader at once, so if you get one use it before trying to get another! And one last thing: Leaders are rare, and I often get 0 or 1 in a game.

From the "Play The World" Strategy Guide it states:

The chances of a Great Leader Appearing are as follows:

1 in 16 (under normal circumstances)
1 in 12 (if you possess the Heroic Epic Small Wonder)

You don't need to attack or get attacked with a civ specific unit (UU) to get a Great Leader.

btw, I did not know that you could only have one GL at a time.

Ah yes, the not-so-complete manual. That one was unknown to me for a long time too.
