I have never used a mod in Civ in my life and I've played Civ since Civ 1. I am a purist and have always been too lazy to figure this out. But I think I'm going to cave. What's the best/most popular AI mod right now? Something that just fixes the AI but doesn't make any other chances. And if you adopt a mod, can you switch back to vanilla with no problems?

As far as I know, mods that don't add stuff can be switched on and off at will. That said, it probably won't help the AI if you turn AI mods on and off.

Anyways, you should definitely use AI+: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/ai.603494/

Im a purist too. At least I was yesterday. Today I started a game with the AI+ mod. Almost lost my capital to Norway. My invasion of Scythia failed moserably and Sumer lost their capital to the Germans. What a nice change of pace.

Big thumbs up to the author. I hope Firaxis is taking notes.

AI+ by SiestaGuru is really the only remaining AI mod that doesn't change anything else. If you want to stay as pure as possible that's the one want.

AI+ is a pretty substantial improvement from vanilla!

If you're willing to abandon your purity, in my modpack I've got AI sets for each individual leader that address building priorities more in depth than AI+ does, but there are a lot of other changes too!

Like you, from Civ I to V I rarely used mod packs, but the shocking state of VI has led to a bit of experimenting.

I currently use and recommend Smoother Difficulty (which creates challenge throughout the game), Biao's Strategic Resource and Tech Tree Rebalance Mod (allows reduced strength units to be made without strategic resources and ties ranged units into the main tree- available on Reddit). Together they give a playable game.

Next game I will add AI+ (Really good reviews) and will hopefully get whupped- good luck

For the most competitive AI / gameplay experience, I have been using:

1. AI+
2. Smoother difficulty
3. Tougher city states (gives city states a few more units at start so they don't immediately get conquered by AI - I like to think this still maintains the "purity" of the game as it doesn't change any rules.. more of a difficulty adjuster)

Also "settlers retreat" mod will make the AI more competitive.

I have been hearing a lot about that one. Will give that a try in my next game because Settler stealing is too lucrative a strategy indeed.
