I am playing a regent game on a standard map...here is some backround info. There are 8 civs. 3 of which are strong (Rome myself)(Inca and England). I Have an entire continent to myself having driven out the Carthagians who now have only 2 cities on small islands that I am to lazy to destroy. I am now at a crossroads however. Those stupid Inca left me in an akward posistion. I always build Sun Tzus art of war and somehow they beat me 2 it, its probably because Rome is not a scientific civ, so i did not get the auto discovery at the beginning of the middle ages. Anyhow.. I am currently just into the Industrial Age, as are the other 2 strong civs. My land is mostly grassland (45%) plains (20%) tundra (15%) floodplains/desert (10%)hills/mountains (10%) they are all roaded and i have irrigated everything except for mountains/hills, grassland(majority),and tundra. The things I just listed are mined. I am debating which gov to switch to. My cities are all in the 6-12 range but after aquaducts they should all be 8 or 9 pop.+ Should I switch to communism, or democracy...i am not looking to house a lot of troops, but i am looking to kepp a substational army...any ideas. I am currently under monarchy...please feel free to speak ur mind. Hell tell me what other gov. might be a choice as well . Thanks for your patience in reading this and I thank you all in advance for you replies and help.

I usually switch to monarchy and stay with it the rest of the game. No war weariness, good support when you start getting metropolises and paid labour which fascism and communism lacks.

Well, I would definately stay out of Communism, as corruption doesn't sound like a problem (is it?). If you think you might be going to war again, I'd stay in Monarchy, but if you will be aiming for a peaceful goal (maybe 1 or 2 short wars), Republic/Democracy would work. I choose Republic, as it has unit support, increased commerce, pretty small corruption, but less war weariness than Democracy. Democracy could work, but because all of your terrain is roaded and connected, I don't think the faster workers would help. So either Monarchy or Republic, based on wars, would be my vote. :)

I concur with the past two posts. Here are some reasoning in choosing a government:

Monarchy: Constant wars and a small to medium sized empire.
Republic: Mostly peace time, but can handle war pretty well without too much weariness. Perfect for building AND keeping your army at the same time. For small to medium empires.
Democracy: I only use when I no longer need to use my military aggresively, or to build when I am playing as a religious civ (quick change to Communism or monarchy or republic for war) Good for medium to huge empires, or anysize that needs to improve territory or research quickly.
Communism: I usually only use this government for HUGE empires where corruption is too much to handle. The citizen hurry method makes quick rebuilding after a war impossible, but it has significant advantages since cities far rom the capital can produce the same as your main core of cities.

I want to add some thoughts about communism.

The greatest drawback is pop rushing. So how to build a vital airport in a city on another continent, to open the gates for your flood of units?

Someone called this strategy BOMBER SCRAPPING, but it works with any other unit of high value, too, but because bombers are so mobile it works best with them.

Use your massive production to produce tons of units in your main cities, send some bombers to the new city and disband until you have what you want in one turn. 5-6 Bombers for rushing are no real problem for a huge commie empire.

As Ginger Ale, but Democracy instead of Republic. Usually it is not worth the transition time to go from Republic to Democracy (unless you are Religious obviously). However since you are not in Republic... The faster workers of Democracy will really help laying those railroads. Wars can be fought even in Democracy as loong as you know

If you want lengthy wars stay in Monarchy. Communism might be better but probably not worth the anarchy period. By the time it is significantly better the game is won.

Hi bingen, try C3C 1.22 communism. Much better than vanilla or PtW. A killer government for the player, because you can nullify the pop rushing flaw (IMO money rushing is superior) easily and it virtually eliminates any corruption problems even on huge maps.

For anyone trying a world conquest, needing a lot of productivity for units and rebuilding captured cities as well, it is simply the absolutely best government, nothing comes close. I would even say it is unbalanced.
