What is the usefulness of renaming the unit that spawned a GL? Is it a better unit than the other elite units? Why would they make a change with the new patch that makes no difference in the gameplay?
A unit can only generate a leader once. So, this way you know not to keep trying to use that unit, since it won't get you another leader. Once that unit is upgraded, it can generate another leader, though, as the '*' should be removed.

1) A unit that spawns a GL get's an asterisk. This INCLUDES games saved before the patch.
2) These same units can be renamed WHEN they spawn a great leader. Frankly, I think it's an extremely nice touch. I like renaming units. And frankly, they should extend it to armies - that might actually get me to use it (that and do away with the gay flag bearer...that's find durin 200BC, but a flag bearer in front of modern armor is goofy).

P.S. You can only rename the spawning unit when it happens, not after the fact...
forget the renaming - that is for those like me who feel a certain affinity for important units. the big thijng is the '*' that denotes the unit has already created a leader thus is 'impotent' now.
I like this renaming thing. I was surprised the first time it happened.
And I didn't know you could only generate a great leader from a unit once. But that's all good to know.
