So, we have 4 distinct eras in Civ3, and each era is different in a way we conduct wars.
Some of us better at Ancient age wars some of us prefer wait until industrial ages, some people are equally good at all times.
Personally i prefer having wars at Ancient times and from industrial age and above... That means i don't really like middle age wars and i prefer to use this time to build culture and to catch up with AI in tech race.
I like AA wars because i have to have them in order to expand my empire to the decent size and if i can push AI civs out of my continent and if you play monarch and above that's the only way to be on the same level in technology race by the beggining of middle ages. Plus at this time when you take cities you don't worry much about culture flipping. There is no much culture accumulated yet and by building (or better pop-rushing) a single library or temple you can practically prevent captured city from beeing flipped.
Middle ages war are not much faster than AA wars but there is a lot of culture already, so if you capture a city it is much more likely to be flipped back. This can be eliminated in Industrial and modern ages when it is much easier to take multiple cities at a time or just in few turns therefore having an entire areas captured and less cultural effect from nearby AI cities. Personally, I think Middle ages wars are the most difficult :wallbash: but it is just me..
What about rest of the fellows civ fanatics??? what era is the least comfortable for you to have a war?

Probably modern ages. You have to worry about culture flipping, you need artillery to have a realistic chance of capturing Metros, too many units, takes too long, is generally just too complicated.

Ancient age wars are short, straightforward, and to the point :)

Edit: On a similar thread I made about 14 months ago, I asked (in a poll) "What is your favourite era to wage war?" The results were:

Ancient 16 17.58%
Medieval 34 37.36%
Industrial 21 23.08%
Modern 20 21.98%

I know my favourite era has changed, and i'm sure it is the same for others :)

My favorite is AA too. Simple and clean.
Expetially since my two fav civs have both AA UU, Persia and Egypt......too bad they dont have militaristic trait too :)

Medieval is generally my favourite time for war with modern being the worst as there is little to benefit from a late war unless you are going for domination or conquest and then it means managing huge armies...

Industrial and Modern Wars tend to be mass battles that are both tedious and boring... in contradiction to dmanakho I prefer war in the Middle Ages, Knights and Cavalry all the way!

I can't stand pre-Tank wars in the Industrial ages. I hate trying to take out Riflemen with Cavalry and Cannons, and when the AI discovers Infantry? Foregt about it!

Other than that. I'm game for a war pretty much any time after the discovery of iron.

I prefer modern wars actually, all the neat high tech weapons.... wee!

Worst era for war? industrial age by far. That's when it seems like the units are most equal, so you end up sending stacks of cavalry against riflemen, and it just ends up in a massive slaughter on both sides. Or would that mean its the best era for war? definately fun anyway

The thing with industrial wars is that if you get cavalry first then you can do alot of damage and even with a large amount of defeats cavalry will still retreat occasionally to heal for another day and of course 3 movement points allow for some quick wars if you are prepared.

That is I put replaceble part as a priority #1 when i start industrial age.
It gives you artillery and with artillery baby, those riflemen and even infantry don't stand a chance against cavalry combined with artillery support
Especially when you play russians. Their cossacks have blitz ability and it is not hard to get 3 to 5 MGLs in course of single war.

Key point for industrial wars (well, you have to be prepared for any war but it is especially so during industrial age)is to be prepared. I can't stress enough how important is to have rail-road infrastructure and enough workers to put rail road to just captured cities in one turn. That what makes industrial age wars faster, more effective and more lethal than middle age wars... What takes 5 turns during middle ages can be accomplished twice or three times as fast in industrial age using cavalry with artillery support and rail-roads...
You just have to be prepared and know all your moves in advance.. It really reminds me a game of chess.

The end of the Medieval era - post-Cav and pre-Rifles. Cav simply owns anything else in this period, and running all over the place with them is trivial. Boring.

Luckily, on the higher levels the AI will have Rifles before you've got substantial numbers of Cav, usually.

Most fun: Early Medieval (Knights, Medievals, Pikes, Trebuchets) and late Industrial (Inf, Tanks, Arty, Bombers, Fighters, and finally ships worth bothering with).

What usually causes most disappintment is when the AI reaches riflemen before you want them to. I always aim for earliest possible victory date so if this happens I've half-lost the game.

Most boring, however, is the time between Computers (if you get it) and Synthetic Fibers. One dent in a Mech infantry by a plane and then your tank gets wasted anyway. Most exciting would be Horsemen hiding in mountains and fishing for leaders, and of course knights. Foot units simply have too few options for the attack plans.

Ancient Age is my favorite, my least favorite is modern age, if my game lasts that long. The worst timeing, is before you have tanks and ater the AI get Replaceable parts.

About the middle Age, One game that I played for some reason I researched straight for Military Tradition. So I had Calvary Armies etc for a few turns before the computer had musketmen, let alone Riflemen. Also they barely had Cathedrals and Universities built in all cities, along with either not having saltpeter or not upgrading all units, some of the weaker cities are easy to take, if you go full force toward Military tradition.

One sentence:

I will never play another high level space race ever again!!!

I got dragged into wars and it took like 2 hours per turn!!!!

I like the AA.

I dislike wars in the late Middle Ages and Early Industrial Age. Taking cities defended by Musketmen with Knights is almost fruitless, and it is the same way with Cavs and Rifles. While the Cavalry have some time for fun, it is usually a VERY small window of opportunity. The AI almost never researches the upper part of the Middle Age tech tree until the middle of the Industrial Age which in turn means the quick advent of Riflemen, which makes Cavs usless.

I love Modern Wars. The large army, the destruction of major enemy cities. The tiniest little detail missed could cost you a city you just captured, or maybe one of your own. Plus I love to use the nukes. I don't care if the AI uses them first or not, once I amass about 10-15 the AI's had better watch their back.

Nukes do not really appeal to me as I like to see the enemy's units and have some chance of winning the battle rather than seeing a city partially destroyed. Strangely I don't think any of my games have come to nukes...

I don't particularly enjoy that phase either, but if you have lots of Artillery you can still get a huge military advantage over the AI since it can't use Artillery properly.

I think overall I would have to say Industrial Age though. There is no attacking unit between Cavalry and Tanks (other than the Sipahi and then later units like Marines) which is irritating. There should be an Attack 8 or 10 unit that comes in around Steam Power to give a bit more offensive balance to this period. Maybe something that would be able to take out a Rifleman but have some difficulty with Infantry. Not sure what, from a historical perspective though.

Ancient is fun for being simple and quick. Medieval is fun with Knights and Cavs wreaking havoc. Modern can be tedious but there are so many options, you often have land, sea and air units coordinating, and those Modern Armor Armies in C3C with attack 30 and 4 attacks are too much fun :D

IMHO the worst era is winter...especially if you want to reach Moscow...

Ancient is my favorite, by far.

Modern age is my least favorite, by far. Lots of cool toys, but it takes way too long & with railroads strategy goes out the window.
