What do you consider walking distance. Different people have different definition, so I'm going to define walking distance as the distance you are willing to walk on a daily basis.
Depends. Sometimes I like wandering around, which means any distance I want. But to not request a ride to point X (as in, I want to BE there not just wander), it should be under 2 miles.
Depends on where I'm going and why et cetera. I have walked pretty long distances for various reasons and sometimes I don't even wanna walk to work (approx. 15 mins).
An hour in the winter - that is canadian winter - and summer (unless it's really hot), and easily two-three hours in the spring and autumn when thigns are milder.
For those few of you who know Montréal, I'm the kind of people to walk from the University of Montréal to the Berri-UQAM station (note to non-Montrealers - that's 30-45 minutes by subway (depend on waiting time), I usually cover it in about 1:30 on feet) many times per week (after classes) unless the weather is really bad/cold. I've also been known to push all the way over the Jacques Cartier bridge to the Longueil bus station more than once. . (for those keeping track, that's another half an hour, and it includes steep terrain IE the bridge itself)
Right now, a couple of blocks to a half mile. I'm sadly out of shape.
However, in my youth I would regularly walk about 3 miles from my house to the bart station. Then all over San Francisco, as needed. A lot of times I would walk from downtown (Market and Montgomery) to Pier 39. Don't know how far that is, but it's a couple of miles.
When I first moved to Lawrence, KS, the whole city was walking distance for me. But then, it wasn't much more than three or four miles before you started getting outside the areas I was interested in walking too.
When talking about walking as a way of getting from point A to point B, I'd say 2-5 miles. When walking just for fun or for sports, I can easily walk up to five or six hours. And the warmer the weather the better.
With walking regarded as a mode of tansportation, up to two miles or so.
Walking as recreation, well, I can walk the better part of a day. Covered 70km in one night once - think that's the longest I've walked in one "session" (obviously with some short breaks). It rained.
Walking distance is a distance short enough that it would actually be a pain in the ass to drive. I put up to 1/2 mile, but I really wanted to go up to 1 mile (not an option). 2 miles stretches to that boundary because it does become easier to drive at that point. This is not to say I have never walked 5 miles to get somewhere and I enjoy hikes, but for everyday errands or going to work I'd walk anything less than 1 mile.
