Just a general query, months on, I'm wondering what kind of multi folks are enjoying?

Not just the format, ie. PBEM, online, Lan, etc. but the style- Scenario? Your own edits? Start from scratch? Capture the Wossname?

I for one am enjoying PBEM- not the ones I started in this forum, which have all utterly fizzled out, but I'm on my second game against my brother. I edit a map, give us all the units, and we play, usually with 3-5 other AI civs to beat up on before we square off. Our first game was nuclear era all out war, game 2 I'm using the small mediteranean map with no hope of ever reaching midevil tech. I'm the Ottomans, he's the Romans, weak neighbors around us strong Greece between us. (Probably ought to post it). We each started out fully armed with full cities, bunch of cash, heroic epics in place, etc. It is actually quite fun.

What are you guys up to ?

Mostly online vs a couple of friends, and some AI's, and sometimes just against random people. Nothing special- mostly just small, random maps. I don't have the patience for PBEM's :).

Is lag an issue online these days? I gave up trying online long ago, haven't seen any new patches since then...

Until I can beat the computer on emperor Im not going anywhere near the internet games.

Actually, the games go great when it's only me and one or two friends. Lag is just about nonexistant since we have broadband and fairly good computers (I have a 2.8 GHz P4 and my friend a 1 GHz). With one of my friends, the game crashes every now and then, but goes smoothly most of the time (his computer is a bit slower- 500 MHz if I'm not mistaken).

I only expirience heavy lag when playing w/ people that have a high ping/slow connection. I try to stay away from random people... Sometimes though, boredom just gets the best of me.

I recently won my first emperor level game . I highly recommend trying out these games, most of the people aren't toooo tough... ;) The only thing I REALLY hate is those people that quit when they see 10 or so immortals coming at them at around 2000 B.C. Awe comon! At least tough it out till the end! Give me a challenge! ;)

10 or so immortals eh  I would also be concerned about people who would simply abandon a game, whether it be because of time restraints or laziness etc.

Yeah. The thing is, most people that I play against online tend to aggressively expand early on, as if trying to out-expand the AI. Well, usually, there is no AI, and if there is, there are only a couple of em. So while they're busy building 5-6 cities, I build 3 or so and build a couple of immortals. I check my military advisor ("compared to these guys, we have a strong military!" after building 10 or so immortals) and then go in for the kill. They are usually caught off gaurd, and, well, quit after 1 city falls. One time, I had a guy stay till the bitter end, which was cool .

Yeah, I hate it when people just quit out of the blue. The game's going fine, and suddenly the player drops out. That's why I tend to play most of my games against friends where we can talk to each other on a regular basis, save and resume games later, etc. But playing against random people is a good way to improve your opening strategy :goodjob: .

Me and my brother both have broadband and reasonable computers but regardless of who is the host there is a lag in unit response to being moved.

I'd love to try online again some time.

PBEM is working great- we take a turn a day each, but since I started us off with plenty of hardware, those turns are exciting.

My favourite kind of 'multi' game - allied PBEM with donsig.

In our first game, we reached the nuke area and I actually had to launch an all-out nuke attk on one AI (and being hit by a few of them nukes).

We're now currently into the early parts of our second Mongol-Japanese game.

Like SB's, my other PBEMs had fizzled out... more or less.

i read that multi player made vanilla obsolete and i chuckled but then i find that i play almost excluseivly mp, had to change tactics and everything, much more exciting and elim makes short games possible.
Tiny, elim, as many players as possible no red pings.
For such simple criterea it remains hard to get a game going.

Yep, I'm exhausted, tired of changing the pictures and overreacting to things in OT.

So I'm actually playing Civ3 again, which is a good thing.

Ahh yes. Just played a wonderful MP game with a friend and another "random" person. The game went really well, actually. We're gonna finish it up next weekend, though, as we got pretty tired playing 4 1/2 hours straight. A conveniently timed desynch put an end to our antics... I was winning :goodjob:.

Definitely playing primarily Lan games. It's convenient when you have a fellow CivIII addict living in the same home! ;)
