Here's a short list:

1. Better government's
Overhaul the effect of government on the nation to represent a more realistic and wholistic picture.

2. Ability to colonize captured cities and use them as slaves.

3. As has been suggested by someone, different kind economies - especially private sectors should be introduced; After all the governments do not manage each and everything in modern day countries - from aqueducts to each and every factory and power station. A proper interface to interact with these sectors and they should affect the overall gameplay as well.

4. Better and more sensible trade. After all countries do sell their weapons (outdated?) to allies. And seriously, no one would barter electronics for spices!!!

5. Better espionage, etc. - nations do not just trade and declare war on each other!

6. Better AI pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. Bangladesh would never declare war on China!! But UK's army can defeat those of Egypt.
Also, size of the teritorry matters but what also matters is how you manage the country and its economy. A smaller country can have a better army and a better economy. Larger lands also demand larger maintainence.

Did I miss something??

Have you read any of the material collected here?

1/3 - The government/economy has been revamped so you can mix and match from 5 choices in 5 socio-economic areas...

2 - Colonize captured cities? Send a couple of workers over and add to the local population...

4 - Europe exchanged musket technology with the Japanese for spices and dyes...

5 - Agreed - but it does sound like it's revamped

6 - Agreed - maybe a cost per tile owned?
