I have been playing on a huge continental maps with 12 AIs but have never really been able to expand very large (at least as large as the other civs, perhaps due to placement) And although I remain competitive, should I was curious as to what size and what style the people who visit this particular sub-forum use. As I am contemplating starting an island hugemap with perhaps a few extra islands scattered around...

So far i did alot of continents maps and i am not good at it. I always forget to build a navy and the AI is pretty good with it. Its also hard to defend because they can use the entire coast line. I never attacked a civlization on the other continent so i guessed i could better do an inland map.
I recently started a large highland map with 10 civ. I enjoy it alot more. No worries about a navy and somehow it is more diplomatic involving.
France started a war, i looked at my "friends" and the map, i asked 2 of them to close the borders for france and suddenly he couldnt reach me:lol:

Large Map
Custom continents (5 or 6)
14 civs

What I like about having so many civs is that it feels like real life, some civs I know very well, others not so much. Wars will occur that have NOTHING to do with my civ and won't affect my civ either.
I really like the idea for terra too, very real life like with another continent out there.

I'm playing continents, wound up starting pretty much dead center. So now I'm in about 1300AD with pretty much no boats whatsoever. Should be interesting to see how it plays out. I only just built my first coastal city.

Being inland so far has been pretty good for me. I'm not as easy to attack. Plus I own half the continent so I don't want for much.

Standard Map (anything larger lags my computer later in the game).
6 - 8 civilizations, inland sea

Makes a great game because while you can use the sea, you can monopolize movement across land with closed border, which adds a new sort of map-specific strategy.

I think I will try this one next game... should be interesting :)

I seem to mostly play medium to large "lake" maps. Going to try others, but so far I quite enjoy those. Of course, there isn't really any naval warfare on these maps, so it probably is time to try some alternatives.

:)

I enjoy the custom balanced one, where it places important resources (iron, etc.) near your starting position. It removes the randomness and depending on your prespective, it may or may not be a good thing.

Although one time it placed Iron on a peninsula across 3+ tiles of water.

well atleast it placed it nearby you :) better to have it there than not at all which often happens in normal settings :)

I love inland sea. If feels like I am playing around the mediterranean.

small map, 12 civs. Usually continents but I'll play them all. Nothing like a 2 city empire. You lose one city, you're truely hurting

I like lakes, pangaea or inland sea on medium-sized (large for a lot of players) maps. I prefer longer games (6-8 hours) but I don't like making everyone play a late game. These map sizes and styles allow ancient-era civs/players to play their way too.

The best maps allow both fast contact/war and room to grow and play defense.

I like pangea, continents and terra. Terra is neat because of the barbarian cities that form on the uninhabitated island.

Inland seas....those are flat maps right?

I was disappointed that many of the more exotic map styles only allow for a flat map. I have a good time playing continents, but I found Island maps to be a bit boring. Really tough to find iron and copper and warfare is nearly impossible until later on in the game. I'm playing a game as the Romans on a Terra map right now and so far I am enjoying it but I haven't gotten to the colonization portion of the game yet. I am looking forward to conquering a continent full of barbarians.....assuming I get there first.

delete, double post.

Duel, pangea, 6 civs, modified quick speed(quicker unit production 50% vs 67% of cost, epic tech speed 150% cost, base 10 city growth + 4 per pop, culture levels raised, improvements raised to 100% vs 67% cost). No tech trade, city flip after conquest. Been considering a game with 8 or 12 civs though, but a bit worried about the map just not having enough space for everyone to settle one decent city.

Custom speed makes it easier to have wars before tanks(your units aren't obsolete right after you make them). Have a lot of games that don't get past cavalry...I love those things...
