What temp should HD 5750 run at?

I have a MSI HD 5750 card that runs really hot. At stock, it is 51c idle and up to 87c full load. If I OC it a bit, it can go above 90c. Is this normal? I have read reviews where cards by other manufacturer stay below 70c full load. Should I RMA this card?

The "auto" fan control never push the fan above 50%, it generally ranges from 30% when doing nothing to 50% when under full load, even when the temperature is above 90c. If I manually set it to 100%, then the temperature drops by 5c to 85c, but this is of course too loud when I am doing nothing. I wonder if there is anyway to put the fan on auto, and tell it to vary from 20% min. to 100% max?

You need to set up the fan control with a program like RivaTuner. Id be a little worried that your temps are getting that high on load. Make sure your case has good airflow (more fans is not necessarily better.)

You should also contact MSI and see what they think about the temperatures. Your idle temps are alright but your load temps scare me a bit (my GTX 260+ doesnt go above 75C on load)

I have a feeling that this is unrelated to case air flow though. You see that temp jumps almost 40c between idle and full load, that's quite remarkable: either the GPU fan is very incompetent or the chip is just running very hot. It is likely the later. When I turn off FurMark which used to run the GPU 100%, its temperature drops like a rock falling off a cliff. Likewise when I put load on the GPU it also rises like a rocket. What do you think?

It is also kind of strange that the GPU temp never go much below 50c idle no matter how fast the fan spins. I just kicked up the fan to 100% and let it sit idle, and the thing was 49c, compared to the usual 51-52c idle when fan is 35%, there is almost no difference.

I might have found a potential cause of the high temp. This GPU idles at its full clock speed of 700mhz, whereas most cards would downclock itself to like 1/2 or even 1/3 the speed when it is doing nothing. ATI's Catalyst driver only allows me to OC, but not downclock. This is really annoying.

The idle temp is not really worrying though. They're pretty much at a limit in terms of how low they can go.

It could still well be a problem with case airflow. It might be able to handle the GPU on idle but once it goes full tilt, the airflow may just not be sufficient to keep the GPU's temp lower.

Indeed that's what I am thinking. Given that the Xigmatek S-1283 was able to cool my CPU to 35c load at stock speed, it seems that the ambient temp is probably okay and an aftermarket VGA HSF would probably work quite well too.

I am thinking about getting this, but not sure if it will fit a 5750:

Id make damned sure your card isnt defective. Once you take off the stock heatsink, the warranty may well go right out the window.

Also, that zalman doesnt look even close to enough for a modern card. I see people int he comments talking about 6600's which is practically another millenium ago.

I have never RMAed anything before. It sounds like such a hassle. Do they pay for shipping both ways, how long is the period typically? Does it take months to get my card back???? I don't want to not be able to play games for months, that will be excruciating.

I toyed with the fan speed control a bit in MSI Afterburner, now the fan speed scales with temp and may go up to 100%. With this setting, the load temp at stock is 80c, at overclocked speed it is 83c. Still not great, but now it seems kind of reasonable.

RMA takes about 2 weeks. You pay for shipping to them, they pay for shipping back. This does depend on manufacturer, but thats how it was for EVGA and MSI when I RMA'd stuff to them.

80C on load is a bit on the hotter side, but I wouldnt worry about it. It means your card is likely not defective.

I believe that high 70's low 80's is the average load temp for that card. My 4850 always went to 90+ on loads and did that for a year before i decided to install an aftermarket cooler, temps are now halved and the card is still working just fine.

I modified the case airflow pattern. Now it is as the follows:

- one 140mm top exhaust
- one 120mm rear exhaust
- one 120mm side intake (blowing directly into the video card)

The temp now looks decent:

stock fan@100% - idle: 46c, load 74c

OC'ed, user defined fan speed (scale with temp, up to 100%@80c) - idle 49c, load 78c

Now this seems pretty reasonable.

This stock fan is loud when it is over 50%, now I know why they capped it at 50% in "auto". I should replace it when a reasonably priced VGA HSF come on the market for this card.
