Build a settler first! expansion is the name of the game. You need to expand your core city group as rapidly as possible.

It kinda depends on difficulty level. Also huts can have an influence.

Generally,I'll build at least 2 warriors. At least one of them is off exploring ASAP.Then start with settlers for abit. Then at least 1 horseman(always build horses before phalanx for barbs-exception-rivers or other defensive bonus terrain)

King or lower you can build settler straight away pretty easily.Sometimes this is the best idea.I like to explore the board so I need a few units early out and about. If I don't find them in huts,I will build them.

Build a warrior immediatily to search for huts and explore, then build a horse or a settler. Forget the barrack, you don't have a lot of enemies at the moment, 'cept barbs, but they don't show up right after your first city.

It is dependent on level and starting techs and hut outcomes but in general...

Warrior, Setller, horse if none from hut, temple, settler, wonder

I've been trying to get the two wonders Col and HG in the same city, preferably a 4-special with rivers... but the AI allways beat me to the second wonder. So to get them both in the same city I build three warriors in that city, then start the first wonder. The second settler I found a city that is used as my base for expansion.

I agree with most of the above. I might agree with all of it but have some more research to do. After the last few months with GOTM, I’ve played on the upper levels more frequently so my answer goes as: Prince & below search a bit to see if a hut will give a NONE unit; build city in a prime location. If you have a searcher from the hut, start a settler, if not, build a warrior & then a settler. With lots of grass & a whales to use & HBR tech, go ahead & build a horse, then a settler. At King, similar to above, but search for fewer turns. Emperor & deity -- build two warriors (one to search, one to stem civil unrest) then a settler. :scan:

If I can, I try and build a horseman first so that he can roam around the land more quickly. If that is unavailable, I always build a warrior, just to go out searching. Then I concentrate on building a Settler and start expanding.

What I usually build first is a settler (for expansion), then a warrior (not for defence in the first place, mainly to cope with the third citizen who is always angry at deity level), then a temple (same reason as above, but with the temple I'm allowed to start the Pyramids without the new citizens becoming angry before the wonder is about to be finished).

By the way, I always build the first city within the first two turns (if I see only land, then it's right away ; if I see some sea, I move the settler so that the city will have an access to the sea).

Át deity it's the second citizen, and after a while the first:)

I really don't like to have cities one scquare away from the coast or having a lake in the area, so I always build the city next to the coast.

Yeah! Naval power. :D

I agree with founding coastal cities. Unless there are four specials to be had by founding in a particular spot away from the coast then I refuse to waste the sea squares by being unable to build a harbour or an OS platform. The AI annoys me by founding cities in dumb places like within a 4 special pattern but without access to two of them.

I always build a warrior first for exploration and then another for defense and happiness control while I build a settler third. The first warrior will explore and find a decent spot for the next city, if my second settler has not already found one. I am wary of using my second settler to explore the terrain as I think that it's very valuable indeed and would set you back a long way if he were to be killed, so I'll scout the area around the capital and keep looking at the special pattern to find the best place to go. :goodjob:

I agree with Smash on this one. Generally it depends on the level and geography (big continent v. islands), but I do love  having a NON horseman early in the game!

Legolas-

Build a Warrior first and send him out to explore, unless you have Horseback Riding as a freebie tech. DO NOT research it if you dont get it free. There is some debate about the value of two Warriors versus one Horseman in the beginning. I personally prefer the Warriors, but I respect the argument that the Horseman is a better Barb killer and has a second movement point when bumping into something dangerous.

Enter every hut (study the patterns) except when you are getting close to critical techs (just circle the hut for a turn or two...). Start building your first settler as soon as you can, and if you find a better place for your SCC by the time he is done, send him right there. If your capital is the best SCC site early, build only one more settler there while the second city is getting going, then switch to SCC improvements.

You should find and settle a decent SCC site by the third city at the latest, or else settle for the best you got. You will be getting units from huts unless you are on a small island. Bring the Archers back to garrison your cities, and send the Horsemen out to explore. Bring any Warriors you still have back too, as they can be decent second and third garrisons for your SCC in Monarchy.

Another tip - the Barbarians do not start "popping out of nowhere" until the 16th turn, which is usually 3200BC (at King/Emp/Deity difficulty level). You could have one or two from a hut, but they often disappear if they cannot find someplace to attack nearby. Bigger groups come later in the game. Also, Barbs will not attack your only city.

The analysis of this thread is Right On. I simply build a Warrior, then a Settler. On the other hand, if there is a hut nearby, I'll strike it first - it's never a Barb and usually a None unit, iirc. Then I can found my capital late, but build a Settler first.

The first unit explores around the capital, looking for River or Green for another City site. After that, I pay attention to exploring for city sites, building Settlers, and researching Monarchy, then Trade.

Were you wondering about Deity Level? Not sure, but I think every city needs a Warrior guard asap, later Phalanx asap.

King level:
In capital:settler-settler-warrior(or phalanx)-settler-temple-(market place if time)-wonder
Second city:warrior(or phalanx)-settler-settler-temple-wonder
Other cities:warrior(or phalanx)-settler-settler-temple-caravans (to build wonders in first two cities)
Each first settler goes on to build a new city.

Emperor & Deity level:
As above, but missing out second settler or market. Getting the early wonders is the main goal.

That's my ideal plan, though AI incursions and goody-hut gifts mean it rarely works out that way!

Air units, just bomb them and go in with a ground assult I mean the AI never uses spies so bomb them like there saddam:lol:

i always build a couple of warriors first, then a settler. the warriors can explore and open goody huts.

Takeo

as long as that doesn't lead to disbanding the city

Most cities will have at least two grassland in its territory, if not, you maybe should take a second thought about founding a city there in the beginning. And with a grassland your city will grow faster than it builds a settler. The only problem would be the unhappiness.:)
