N0ob question:

Let's say early on in the game before you can make a city dedicate production to Science or Wealth, and you have no more buildings you can make, and your only option is to produce a worker, settler or military unit etc.., BUT that unit will either make more unhappiness or cost more maintenance.. do you just create a military unit and then delete it?
You're forced to produce something.
Or am I doing it wrong and just take the maintenance hit?
I guess I could gift that unit to a CS.

Such situation is unfamiliar to me, there's a ton of useful buildings available in the early game, and you're going to need some units any way.

Maybe I just went the wrong way with my research, I was making a beeline for Gunpowder right off the bat.
That's why I was unable to make stuff like the market or library etc...

If you ignore libraries you're going to have bad time.

A not-quite-pro tip: one of the things you should get as early as possible is not gunpowder, but the National College. It increases a single city's science output by 50% - and since early on you'll be producing most of your science in that one city anyway, you don't just want it, you need it.

Your nation will struggle if you don't research writing fairly early. And you will need markets etc. to support your economy, 'cos unlike the AI if you go broke you regress rapidly.

Yeah, chances are that a nation that focuses on getting a high science production through libraries, universities and National College get their military techs even faster than you. Civ isn't a game of focus, it's a game of balance. Straightforward rushing towards one end, ignoring everything else, is likely to ruin your game. At least early on, that is.

If you still have unworked tiles, go for a worker, you will need extra production from the improvements to rush your libraries and markets. Get those markets and libraries ASAP and in future games, don't bee-line so hard, it's not worthy. Invest on infra-structure first and then if you still really want to bee-line, do it in a way your science and economy won't suffer too much from it.
