I just finished a war with the French, and after I destroyed them, I'm not sure what to do with my troops... I don't want to attack anyone else yet, but I don't want them to be way back in my cities way out of position when I am ready to go...

What do you guys do with your battle units after you're done with a war?

I use them to quell resistance usually, but you should try to make it so that you aren't left with manny at the end of a war. I keep them near the front lines.

After Im done with a war, if I have RR's, I usually put all my spare troops onto a mountain somewhere three blocks away from any city I own. (Good advice to follow if your in a nuke age) That way I wont forget where they are, and with the RR's I can get them pretty much to where I want them in a single turn.

Hi, am new to CFC forums :D , glad to be apart of this community of great civ minds, i hope to share my knowledge and learn new stuff about civ

What i normally do with my troops

Before a war: If i have RR i would start stacking them in the centre of my empire, normally in there own stacks, so i would have a stack of moderns stack of mechs stack of marines stack of cruise missiles all in separate stacks, i would normally set rally production point to them spots so i don't have to fiddle with newly built units i normally have 1 city producing the same unit also

After a war: Would use the remaining units to squish resistence before bringing them home and restacking them and planning my next war

Yeah, using RR would be nice, but I'm still at around 200 AD, so those advancements aren't really open to me...

a screen shot would be useful to see where your borders are. just position them near your other borders, and if you have any to spare, reenforce your cities and use ur troops as military police.

If you are in the republic or democracy... and you really have a huge army but you dont plan to use them any time soon... disband them in cities to rush infrastructure. I know its painful to watch your units die, but for every unit you disband, you gain shields for your temples or libraries and you gain 1 gpt. this may not be as practical in civ 3 as it in real life though

I normally move them into position for my next war, even if I dont plan to go to war for 20 turns or so. I like to know i'm prepared for war

I have this problem too. I usally disband them and send some troops to new conqured cities also send some home. But when my next war comes its very hard to get my troops to the enemy. So i am sort of forced with the troops coming near to spend alot of gold on building troops in near by city of the enemy.

So what i do know is have a small fleet near each enemy.

There are so many times in many games. I positioned my troops on one side, thingking that I would attack the neighbour there. Just before I attacked, otherside neighbour was declaring war and attack. Its a pain moving troops from one side to the other before cavalry. After RR, I place them stack in the middle (I play large map) where I could find them easier. Before them, I place them in borders with most of them are in the border of my next enemy.

I will use the troops to invade another country. An army is as good as it gets in a war.
As u can see, my civilisation is in a 4000 years war :)

if i have extra units after a war i usualy go attack someone else, but if you don't want to do that you could load them into galleys/caravels/galleons/transports and position them in the ocean at a point where they could quickly retaliate against any civ (this works particullary well on arpegios and continents) aso when war breaks out you alread have an invasion force there and ready to go

What kind of troops? (and what version of Civ3?) If they're horsemen or knights, you can upgrade them to cavs later on. I usually place them near the next target.

Depends on the amount of unsettled territory. If there is some territory that I don't want, and the AI hasn't settled there, I send them out as like scouts. To make sure that barbs don't become a problem, but this rearely happens. Otherwise they are usually never idle, I send them to my nearest neighbor and attack.

I use them to quell resistance and repair them to prepare them for the next war.

Seems that on the hard levels, you can never have enough military. There have been times that I thought I had a decent amount of both offencive and defensive troops to stop any invasion, but am still slowly crushed by what seems to be an endless supply of enemy troops. So I wonder, where do you get time to worry about anything but building more troops?

When you have just had a huge war and don't feel like starting a new one and have too many units that you can't support them all.

It doesn't matter if there is a war and peace. You've got to have modern to its age and powerful army, so AI never has a thought of starting bullying you.
And there is not simple answer on this question. It depends on current game and situation. Generally, keep you army as big as you can afford, upgrade obsolete units, disband those can't be upgraded unless you need to use them to quell resistance or as a military police in certain governments. Listen to your military advisor, never disband units unless you really really want to do it.
As it is been said if you want to be in peace - prepare for war.

Pick another war with your nearest neighbour. Keep the troops busy :p

That's what I like hear. Go kill 'em, that's what they're there for :D

I like to rearrange my troops so that each city has three units on it once I get railroads. It just makes sense. And before I get RR, I pretty much play a game of always war, so my troops are always busy. I stop to build during wars, when I have too many units. (30+ over the limit, usually.)
