I am curious what the users, whom frequent the Other Games, on what kind of gaming player they are. This poll should not be confused with the ongoing poll that can be found in General Civilization 3, since this poll only focus on Other Games that are not related or not directly related to any of the Civilization series games (that were made by Sid).

I was reading in wikipedia about video game players (it also applied to computer game players too)

Wikipedia said:
A video game player is a person who plays video games or sometimes computer games. A video game player who plays video games as a regular hobby or routine almost everyday is a full-time gamer, and one who does not play them that often is a part-time gamer. Video game players are mostly from Generations X and Y. According to the Entertainment Software Association, as of 2004 an average video game player was born in 1974.

Video gaming is a traditionally male hobby. Until the 16-bit era, female video game players were extremely rare. Today, 30 percent of PC gamers and 20 percent of console gamers are female. Video game players who think older video games are more fun than newer ones sometimes call themselves old school gamers, and the opposites are called new school gamers. Most gamers recognize two types of video game players: hardcore and casual.

Chocies #1 in the Poll w/ decscriptions of each
Hardcore gamers are video game players that purchase many video games, make the purchase decisions independently, and have video gaming as their one of their top priorities. Most hardcore gamers are males and are within in an age group of 14 years of age to 30 (as determined by the Entertainment Software Association). Many in the video game industry consider hardcore gamers to be their core audience and sometimes rely on them as early adopters who will provide word of mouth advertising to casual gamers.

casual gamers are occasional video game players who play only to entertain themselves. The age group is varied, ranging from children to advanced adults. This group tends to be heavier saturated with women than other groups and is the most populous of any of the groups. What this group lacks in enthusiasm for the latest and greatest hardware and engrossing gameplay, they make up in sheer numbers. Some companies that specialize in casual games have become very successful just by making games that are easy to play and somewhat engaging, such as PopCap Games (makers of Bejewelled, Bookworm and Zuma). Several of the all-time bestselling computer games attracted the attention of casual gamers, such as Myst and The Sims.

Choices #2 in the poll w/ descriptions of each
An "old school" gamer is a video game player who believes that older (pre-32-bit era) video games can be just as amusing as today's video games. "Old school" gamers are partly responsible for the popularity of console emulation. Some collect old video games and prototypes, or are in the business of refurbishing old games, particularly arcade cabinets. The NES and SNES, Sega's consoles, Atari's 1980s era consoles, and the Neo·Geo** are among the most popular systems to collect.

Moderate/Neutral gamers beleve that both older and todays video games are both entertaining.

New School gamers beleves that newer video games are more amusing than the older, obsolite games of the past.

This is a multi choice poll. Please only pick two choices. (IE: Chose eather Hardcore or Casual for the first choice, then chose eather Old, Neutral, or New for the second choice)

Poll for the "type of Civ player". Poll is losely based on this poll with modifications to make it more geared to the Civ Genre

I'm hardcore but i do lots of other things as well, it's not my top priority but all the other things are right, i'm old school but there are various new titles that are good, but again more oldschool (this is due to me love of all things retro!)

As with the Civ player poll. I voted for Casual and Neutral.

I play all day if I can. I'm mostly into late 90's games, but I also like some of the "new" games. I also like some old arcade-style games when I need something that doesn't take too long to finish. I guess that makes me neutral with one foot in "new school".

Then I am not an average gamer. I'm born in 1987, 13 years too late.

Old School I would say as I dont like new games where you have have memorise 2000 different button combinations. Move and jump do just fine.

Hardcore and Neutral. I spend a lot of money on games, but don't play them as much as I used to. :( As long as a game keeps me interested, whether with story or gameplay or whatever, it doesn't bother me whether it's old or new. :)

Don't worry; they base these things on polls. There's probably a lot of 50- and 60-year olds out there who play video games and just happen to be tipping the scales a bit ;)

I'd describe myself as hardcore (my parents have to tell me to stop quite often, and every now and then I'll skip a meal or two) and neutral (if I can play it to my satisfaction, I will; I've often bought sequels of certain games, then "reverted" back to the originals or another older form when I discovered it was too much harder or more complicated).

Casual and Neutral (I don't play many games besides Civ3, does this count), although I'm more toward New-School than Old-School (an old game can be just as good as a new one, it's just harder, IMO.)

When i play a game, i must know every little detail there is to know. Every game i do play, i will be one of the best players on the net (although with starcraft there is a difference since that game is played truely profesional, meaning people make 100.000's a year by playing it 80 hours a week, can't compete with that)

The number of games i play is very little though. Normally only one at the time:
5/6 - 2 years ago: starcraft
2 - 1 years ago: Diablo 2
last year: civ3
Next year: World of Warcraft.

before that i wasn't like this, before that i was a more diverse gamer, playing many games but none so deeply.
Although around 10 years ago, i did make it a quest to finish all 111 levels of supaplex. A quest that still to my shame, i failed. (got in the 80's of levels iirc)
starcraft is what brought the insanity into me i think.

This poll needs a new option: Competitive

Competitive: These players do not constantly adopt new games. Although they play as much or often more then a hardcore gamer, they will play only one or two games within a specified genre, they play competitively and are the TRUE experts (not the experts that everyone claims to be) at their game. They might put in over 5000 hours into a single game. Many win money through tournaments. Some examples of competitive gamers would be the everquest addict who plays everquest exclusively for 10 hours a day, or the age of empires II players who have won thousands of dollars in tournaments.

I doubt there are any of those here though.

Definitely old school. I remember when the Atari 2600 was a big deal. Sure the new games rock, but they don't generate the same rush as the old games when they were first played. I've bought games at today's prices only to find out that they didn't keep me entertained as long as an old Pac Man thing that we got for Christmas about 20 years ago. Damn, I miss that thing...

Yep, i think nowadays there are many competetive players, but of course not everyone has what it takes to make it to the money making top. In starcraft i did not have the speed for it certainly. Also probably not the mind to play at my very best every single day. Sometimes i would have a bad day and lose every game while other days i won from people i never exected to beat. To be a pro player, you need to be consistent.

Therefore, i would say add 2 options:

Competetive, for those who like me play with the goal of being as good at the game as they can.

and Professional, for those who get payed for gaming. No, very likely there aren't any of those around here :D.

Well I still have a MegaDrive sitting in my drawer in near perfect condition I also have a Commodore 64 in the attic, so I think that kind of edges me towards old school, although I do like a few new games. One thing I hate is the newer games that rely on graphics to be good rather than concentrate on gameplay. Back in the day, all games had crappy graphics so they had to make the gamplay great to make them worth playing.

BOW TO ME!! Hardcore and Old-School.

Gotta love them old games. Leisure Suit Larry is my God.
