My personal opinion is Masonry,
As at the higher levels I need to expand and grow to counter the computer advantage so Pyramids are my main goal.

Well, if ANY advance in the game is the question...

From the standpoint of "I want to win", I'd pick Fundamentalism.

But, that's more or less a cheating way to win (although fun and what I usually go for if not playing against one or multiple humans. good way to learn).

In the interest of "playing fair", since Fundamentalism is so extremely unrealistic...

I'd want to get the upper hand with science. I'd go for the advance that allows The Great Library in a multiplayer game, cuz I usually fall behind trying to explore as much as possible.

Definetley Iron Working, as I use Legionaries to defend my cities as soon as possible. But I'd love to have Invention so that I could build Leonardo's Workshop, and then develop gunpowder and instantly get loads of musketeers in exchange for my obsolete units! MWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

It's from Faith No More's album "King for a Day - Fool for a Lifetime". The song is "Just A Man" (Mike Patton).

If it could be ANY tech at all, then it would be either Communism or Explosives.
Communism because it's a good for World Domination and it's still better for science and happiness than Monarchy, and I can build the U.N. straightaway. Explosives because I get Engineers straightaway

If it's just one of the seven normal starting techs, and I'm playing at my favourite level (King), then Masonry would be good as I get to build Pyramids and Great Wall. Actually, anything would do except Pottery.

Well, the first thing I usually go for is Republic, so if we are talking the first few techs then it would have to be one of these, writing, code of laws, alphabet, literacy. I find that bumping my science and my money early in the game get me much further faster.

Well if you write L100,000 in Briain, it would be worth about £32 (or $50).

However I suspect you're going to tell me that (like France) the ',' is a decimal point rather than the '.' that we use. So it would be worth 3 pence.

Nevertheless, I expect you're a man of honour with a "Spotless" reputation

, and even if the postage costs more than the prize itself, I'm sure you still send it to me!

In a typical game, Monarchy is my first goal for a scientific research program; since it is impossible to reach this goal directly in four advances, I take Horseback Riding, simply for the exploration potential; and then, in quick succession: Ceremonial Burial, Alphabet, Code of Laws, and then Monarchy. (Of course, the way the tech tree works in a game, picking up early advances via "goody huts" or first contact with other civilizations can throw off this objective. Therefore, it is not uncommon for me to at least bypass some good huts until I reach Monarchy.)

I would have to agree, explosives would be pretty cool to start off with. Cities, roads and irrigation build heaps faster and you can tansform thoughs desert squares straight away.

You see, Stormerne Unfortunately I usually end up with an 'Atrocius' reputation before I get to 1AD

, but I'll see what I can do about that 3p for you

My current game I started with Bronze working, which was very cool cuz I could build Phalanx for defense right away (never built a single warrior) and can build Colossus. I like to go straight to Monarchy, but also like Horseback riding for exploration early, so hard to say. ANY advance, probably Mobile Warfare.
