In my last game, I was on the southern coast of a big 'O' shaped continent with Zululand and France. I was boxed in early on as they tried to settle on the vast jungle ocean up north. By focusing on infrastructure (supported with a worker factory in Shanghai) I was able to easily conquer them. I was really able to do this because I got cities bordering their capitals first of all, cutting the sizes of their cores in half.
