What's the command "RETIRE" in the game menu for?

As the title, what is it for? Has anyone ever intentionally clicked on it? I find it meaningless. I just accidentally clicked on it instead of the OPTION command so i had to load the game again. No confirmation message appeared. It was somehow annoying.

Retire counts as a loss. It is the CiV equivalent of toppling your own king in chess.

You mean in multiplayer mode? As for single game, if i'm about to lose a game, i'll just get straight to the main menu to make a new game

Don't know about MP, but in SP it's only use is to close out a game that, for whatever reason, you want to show as a loss in your personal HOF.

I never use it (as you say, just delete the save and start a new game), but I suppose someone out there (maybe? anyone? Bueller?) might want to track their losses without having to grind through to the bitter end.

I use it! If I'm staring defeat in the face I'll usually retire. I'll even retire due to lack of interest. I'm assuming there is some cleanup of files that takes place when I retire.

I don't think there's any more clean-up of save files than when you switch to a new game. The autosave files get written over, but manually saved files are not deleted until you manually delete them.

Also don't think there's any clean up of system memory with retire vs. switch games. The only way to clean up the (notorious? merely irritating?) memory leakage from long play sessoins is to restart.

This is how most of my games end unfortunately. I'm either bored or losing badly and I rage-click that button.

I wish you could hand over your side to the AI to play out. Sometimes once victory is inevitable I just quit, but it would be fun to watch the AI win it. Didn't old versions of civ have that? Or am I hallucinating?

Retire should turn your forces over to the AI. I can already quit the game, or ctl alt del, or throw my computer. Depending on the rage.

Retiring shows you the after-action report, with the graphs and maps and timelines. Helps you figure out what went wrong. Makes you a better player for next time.
