What's the deal with Democracy and wars?

Ok here's another one I ran into. I was in a democratic government, I had court houses and police stations in almost every city and Universal sufferage. I was thinking that starting a war in democracy shouldn't be to bad this time cuz I had all the stuff and I was ready, I got into a war in democracy last week and I didn't start getting civil unrest until turn 3 or 4, but this time around it started right away, and it was bad!!!!!!! I eventually had to change governments because everyone was starving and not producing. Funny thing is when I went into anarchy during the switch all of a sudden all these cities started to restore order, and some even went into we love the "me" day. Can anyone exlpain to me how that happened, and has anyone had any success in a war having a demorcratic government?? I don't think this is very realistic, I can understand war weariness but why was everyone happier in anarchy then democracy, It just don't make sense!!!

I can tell you that unrest depends on whether you attack first and whether you declare war on the other guy or break a promise. Courthouses don't do anything for civil unrest. And anarchy doesn't have any war-weariness penalties, so that's why your people are content. It was the same way in Civs 1 and 2.

Anarchy doesn't have war weariness. So as soon as you held a revolution, the war weariness wore off and so your people were happy from the luxuries, etc. Democratic wars are possible, but not for very long, unless you hire ALOT of entertainers. There seems to be some things that determine how much war weariness you have:

1. How many units you have in enemy territory (think of it as how many of your citizens are stationed overseas).
2. CASUALTIES - Are you losing alot of units? The more people who lose loved ones in a war, the more people you have that will want to end the war.
3. Whether or not you were the agressor. Democracies generally do not support a war that was started for no reason. However, if the Democracy was attacked first, the people will support the war better.

Try Republic, republics have far less war-weariness and only a minimal difference in corruption compared to Democracy.
 
War weariness is controlled by many factors. As Bamspeedy pointed out, if you loose, you get more, if you're the aggressor, you get more and so on.

But why WLTKD in anarchy???? Well, there is the opposite effect as well! People will gather behind the leader, outraged at the enemy, when they feel sneak attcked - or are in a 'loe' government. I've often gone to war, then made peace many turns later only to find unrest suddenly appearing everywhere.....


If you manage your demo carefully, you can even use this effect for prolonged wars! Always get the others to sneak attack, beat them up (don't ever loose cities!!!!!), make peace with ine guy (so the effect of ww doesn't double) ewhile you fight the other, then get the second to sneak attack again just when you're ready to make peace with the other civ.

I've stayed at war for 200 turns like this with 20" lux and 2 entertainer per size 12 city (and 6 lux I have to admit. But that was what I went to war for).
 
I recently went through a long, defensive war as a democracy. I had many luxuries (but not all), and I needed few entertainers. I was sneak-attacked by a much larger, stronger foe (Mao was "Gracious," offered an MPP which I gladly accepted, and three turns later abused his RoP to attack his new MPP partner!). I got the initial boost of happiness from the sneak attack, with a few WTLKDs where not already in progress. Then it was a long slog of Mao's 50+ unit stack of infantry, riflemen and the occassional swordsman moving into my territory. I simply did not have the strength to go after the AI, and restricted myself to artillery barrages and some very limited mopping up. About 18-19 turns into the war, without one instance of civil disorder or unrest, and with far more happy citizens than unhappy citizens, my democracy was overthrown!

During the entire conflict I never lost access to a luxury, never lost a city, and lost very few units (compared to Mao). BUT, there was always a ton of enemy units in my territory and a token presence of my troops in enemy territory (according to the manual, the two "leading" causes of WW).

So, moral of the story is that war weariness can sneak up on you!
 
If u wanna goto war with someone and not start it. Do a bunch of spy missions on them tell u get got. First all u learn troop positions and stuff and you also dont have .to start the war

Killer, I started a war when I had despotism or monarchy (monarchy I think) and then I switched to republic later. Which govt. matters, the one I had when the war started or the one now? I have been at war for about 3000 years with the same enemy (Zulu) bt the only unhappy ones are the ones in conquered cities, and only half of the conquered ones.
 
A litle trick of mine, when you start a war in democracy, destroy your adversary in 1 turn... otherwise don't botter trying, you'll get bull****...
 
It is possible to wage war while in democracy. I've had 30+ turns of war without a single city in riot (and with 0% luxury rate). The trick is to have enough happiness boosters (I always try to secure most luxuries and happiness wonders and all happiness buildings), never loose a city (people hate that), and only fight just wars. Try to let the opponent declare the war, and you'll see many of your cities go into WLTKD which will last for quite a while unless you start to loose.
