As for Mary's usefulness, perhaps keep her weak but give her the Marksman ability.

If you gave her the marksman ability then she should be much weaker then she is now. The way the AI works, they put workers in cities during war time. That is not a bad thing, but if Mary had the Marksman ability then there would be a guarantee that you could plague a city, making the cities defenders half as strong.

Really? I've always found her rather useless. Her STR isn't very high, she doesn't have the hero promotion, and her 'plague' is probably the laughing stock of disease family.
Am I missing something? Does she have some ability to spread the plaque without a high chance of dying while doing it? (I know about her moderate retreat ability - still not impressive)

If you're playing calabim the lack of hero promotion is completely irrelevant- a vampiric mary is one tough cookie.

Although it's very difficult not to suicide her, she's basically a mini-atomic if your opponent sends a huge stack into your territory. the -60% strength coupled with the huge negative healing promo used to be game over.

Now that the negative healing promo doesn't reduce HP she's kind of useless however. Still useful for calabim if you want to seige cities, or for lurichurp because you can defend her with golems so she can get some XP.

I've a thought.

Make Mary a non-combat unit. Make her be like loki and able to enter cities. Units in that city have an X% chance (per turn) of developing the plauge. If she's in a city long enough, pretty much everyone in the city is going to get the plague. She could also be an invisable unit - requiring those who can spot invisable units to kill her.

In this, some noble assassin or such will be required to find and contain marry - perhaps at the cost of its own life.

It solve the problem of her being weak and how to spread the disease - also it makes it a bit more of seemingly "population" issue. Perhaps she also somehow hurts the food supply in any city she is in.

No more guarding her, just send her on her mary travels.
