It's very different because it's turn based. Civilization is almost like a big board game. I have played Age of Empires and really enjoyed it. Then I found Civilization. To me, Age of Empire doesn't compare.
For one thing, Civilization is a lot harder for me. I mastered AoE in about a year. I have been playing Civilization for about 3 years and still have not mastered it.
Civilization gives you so many options. Age of Empires was war war war, and maybe a wonder or relic victory somewhere in there. Civilization can be all war, or you can go all peace, or go anywhere inbetween. The countless styles of playing makes each game unique and the player wanting more.
To not sound like a sales man, simply stating, this game is my favorite game and the best game I have ever played. I highly recommend it to anyone who does not mind being addicted.

It's a very methodical game - I can never get the hang of games like Age of Empires, Warcraft, all those RTS things. How long does one of those games last? A game of Civ (1, 2, 3 - almost any version, come to think of it) can last days. I think I've been playing my most recent (and most successful, until the Aztecs decided to squash me) game for.... about 10 hours so far. (will have to check) And I'm only up to about 1400 A.D.
You might think of it as slow, but we addicts think of it as detailed, deep and intricate.

It is a turn-based game. You settle cities, build city improvements, research scientific discoveries, build military units and conquer the world, if you wish. You can also trade resources and luxury items which have a profound impact on the game, especially since certain units require certain resources (pikemen-iron, knights-iron&horses, musketmen-saltpeter).
You can also play as 16 different civilizations, all with a unique unit and civ-specific traits that determine that civ's strengths.
I highly recommend picking it up.

This game has saved me so much money. I used to buy a new game at least once a month. Now for the years this game has been out, I only buy the expansion packs and have no interest in most other games (or time for them 
).
).Buying Civ 3 is sort of like buying your first hit of heroin. You know it's going to feel really good but you will become hopelessly addicted and it will ruin your life; you will get no work done and have no time to see your friends. You will wait all day just to get another hit of your drug. And once you're hooked, there's no cure. They don't make Civ methadone clinics.

I've played quite a bit of Warcraft and C&C, but they just got old to me. I never played more than a few games of each just because it seemed like the same old, same old.
CivIII (Conquests) is an entirely different beast. As has been mentioned, it is turn based, so you get to think out (plan) your moves, even having to think a few turns ahead (like chess).
You can play the regular game, customize it to your liking, or, if those have bored you, play the scenarios within the expansion pack (Conquests). Then, if that isn't a challenge enough, play the many player-built scenarios that you can download *free* right here at CFC!!
Personally, I like the war aspect, so every other CivIII game I play I'll turn off the other winning options to focus it towards war. By the same token, if war is not your thing, you can customize the game (really easy) to focus towards science and/or diplomatic victories.

I paid $40 for Civ 3 Complete at my local GameStop just the other week. It's pretty much Civ 3 plus both expansion packs and updated to the latest patch. I've played the original game as well and I must say the expansion packs add a lot to the game; they're definitely worth the extra couple bucks. I recommend going with Civ 3 Complete for $40, or less if you can find it cheaper somewhere.
