What's the main aim of the game anyway?

Sorry for the ignorant question but...what is the main aim of the game anyway?
I am building and developing colonies and doing some evolution. But...now what? What must I be looking for?
Sorry for the question, but I do not play Colonization since the oldie Commodore Amiga 500.

Declare Independence from your King, and defeat his REF (Royal Expeditionary Force).

You'll need to put people to work in Town Halls (preferably Elder Statesmen) to get your rebel sentiment up to at least 50% (so you can declare Independence).
You'll need a good-sized army to defeat the King (he has a lot of troops!).
