you've ever managed to pop from liberalism? I just popped chemistry on an emperor game, but none of the AI's had discovered education yet so I could have gone even farther. Do you always try to get as far up in the techtree before you pop, or is there some limitations you should take into consideration?

I usually try for the most expensive tech if I get Liberalism or the Oracle. However sometimes I take a tech which will give me a useful civic or let me build some wonder. It depends on the game situation.

I've gotten industrialism and biology before, on very low levels.

it depends a lot on what you are trying to do. I have had games where I take Mil Trad from lib, cause I really want curaissers

I once got Assembly line around 1200AD on immortal in a fairly recent game as WK. It was notable because I had unbelievable good luck with the RNG - we had a high-:hammers: capitol with gold in the BFC in an area with lots of rivers, popped silver and gems in the surrounding cities in the classical era, and although the AIs were a mixed bag for a normal game they had really favorable personalities (random personalities on) for tech trading but delayed liberalism until I traded education.

I got fusion from liberalism in a settler space race gauntlet!

got Flight from Lib in my last Emperor game ... i had completely rolled over my continent (consisting of Hammu of Ottoman, Cyrus of Mali, Suiliman of Byzans and Hannibal of England, of which only Suili and Hammu had reasonable land) while the other continent (Napoleon of Zulu, worst contender, Brennus of Khmer and Sitting Bull of Etiophia had on/off warred each other since dawn of time) and the isolated Mansa Musa of Maya (craptastic land, a whole 4 food, two of them seafood deep in the northen icewastes) just went and did nothing ... had the ability to tech Liberalism for nearly 500 years before i did it, mostly because i wanted the civics it had and not because anyone was actually close.

Prime example of a game where the leaders who could be dangerous had crappy land, and the weaker leaders had reasonable/good land (didn't help them that my first two cities had 3 gold mines and a load of FPs between them, and gems popped in my capital the first turn after i built a mine)

A not too uncommon move is to take steel from lib. This often means instant win, because cannons rule...

Yep, same here. Steel from Liberalism is the usual extent of my ambition.

Maybe not the most advanced but the most memorable is: Fishing.

I took that tech as a joke (since the game was going so well anyway) but boy was it ever fun to do! :D Any time that I feel the stress about possibly missing Liberalism or hear the sound of someone being the first to found Liberalism before me, I console myself with the fact that "I might have only grabbed Fishing with it anyway." ;) All of a sudden, my worries go away, a smile appears on my face, and I actually start to feel happy about having missed Liberalism.

I mean, at least now, there will be a good chance that I'll get a more useful tech in trade from the AI that beat me to Liberalis--an AI who is programmed to take a better tech than Fishing. ;)

Although, wouldn't it be a great "laugh in your face" move for an AI to grab Fishing, knowing that doing so would slow down your eventual victory?

Constitution. :( I usually suck too much at this game, and usually time is very tight by the time I reach lib. I'm always afraid someone in a faraway land is close too.

I was playing NC72 and I was waiting the AI to sort of catch up to education on their own pace.
I had liberalism in 1 so I unlocked Assembly Line and got that. Then generated about 7000 gold to get Amphibious Infantry and go to town on the world. (:

Military Tradition, for sure. I usually self-research or trade for Nationalism.
Though the earliest time I've ever gotten Lib was before I even had Monarchy, haha. Funny things happen when you set your Research to beeline Lib.

Genetics. It's just weird: Sometimes the AI kicks my behind on noble, other times I can pull things like this on the same difficulty level. I probably neglected micro a lot less than usual in that game and actively pursued GPs and such.

My most common liberalism tech is probably Astronomy, although Nationalism or Printing Press are relatively common as well.

Of course if you want the BEST, then like ParadigmShifter mentioned earlier, it would be Fusion in a settler game. I basically played that game with the sole intention of seeing if it was possible.

In an OCC I often try for Biology. That's possible even on intermediate levels. National Park is awesome in OCC. In a regular game I'm too impatient and go for Steel. Cannons + whatever you have makes a great military.

In a regular game I won't typically go for anything more advanced than Steel/MT/Sci Method. OCC, Biology is easy even on Deity. On Settler/Marathon the way some people play it, I imagine it would be trivially easy to Lib Future Tech or whatever you want (I'm talking about the ridiculous games where people have state property and dozens of cities comfortably in the BCs.)

Same here, usually i finish getting Astronomy or Printing Press, I usually never choose Nationalism cos many AI research it and it is better to get it via exchange. I think Chemistry would be great, but usually the race is too tight to get it in +monarch level

The highest I ever got was Electricity. I thought it was useful since I'm a bit of a windmill and watermill junkie. Don't know why, but those two improvements always seem to have a decent return (if you have the right civics and the techs of course!)

They seem to because they do! I'll often convert mines to windmills in the late game. Sometimes the windmills even make Environmentalism into a good choice. Really, any squares you occupy after Watermills become good should get a Watermill and not a cottage because Watermill gives you full value faster.

The trick of course, is bulbing. Like others, Steel, Rifling and Mil Trad are among my common choices. I took Communism in one recent game.
