in the tech tree i dont see any bonus with railroads, so why build them and not just make normal roads?

And there is an output increase in certains improvements, like a mine, with railroad gives +1 hammer.

Damned if I can find exactly which improvements get the +1 bonus anywhere whatsoever. It's certainly not in the Civilopedia. Mines and Lumbermills definitely get the +1 Hammer bonus and Windmills definitely don't. Are there any others that do?

I think it's just mines and lumbermills. Windmills, watermills and workshops definitely don't, and I can't think of anything else that logically would.

This is most definitly true. Mines and lumbermills only.

I spent about 15 minutes browsing the civilopedia the first time I got railroads when I wanted to know what exactly they do. I guess it should be fairly obvious to everyone that it gives shield bonus to just mines and... umm... lumbermills was it?

This feature is undocumented, but beside movement bonus railroads also add +1 production to mines and lumbermill.
Keep in mind, that you need coal to build railroad.

It's not entirely undocumented, when you notice that it is on the glossy foldout.

I just build railroads all over the city radius like in all the other civ games :D

Does the mine have to be connected to a city for the +1 production bonus or can you simply create a railroad on that tile and get the benefit?

You can move from one side of your empire to the next in like 2 turns :)

By the time you research railroad, your territory should be filled with improvements, meaning that all your workers have nothing else to do to improve your land. And when you do research it, your workers will have something to do again!

Yep at that point what I do is use 2 or 3 workers to build rail routes connecting all my cities and put the rest on auto, they know which tiles need railroads :) I never auto my workers tell after I have built all the lumbermills I want and I have the option turned on that tells workers not to change a upgrade already built.

Faster movement within your territory is good for both offense and defense. Offensively, you can amass an army with units built from your whole territory without waiting several turns for them to travel from the far side. And defensively, you can get by with fewer defenders, because spare units from all over can suddenly flock to where they're needed.

On the +1 mine/lumber mill feature being undocumented, I'm pretty sure that just by hovering your mouse over one of those improvements it will tell you that adding a railroad will add 1 hammer. Thats how I found out.

If you have a worker standing on a tile and then you mouse over the build railroad button, it'll tell you if building a railroad will add +1 hammer to that tile or not.

It only adds +1 on lumbermills and mines...

Re-employment! We Won't Won't Have To Eat Dolly After All!

*Edit* AH Crap, How do I delete this?
