What's up with loading saved games?

Ok, here is my problem:

I got the game today, started up a new game as the Spanish everything was fine and I could play without any problems whatsoever, it ran smoothly, even when I got up past the renaissance and had about 20 cities and playing on a huge map, however I had to leave the comupter for a while so I saved my game, returned and tried to load my game up, and all of a sudden the game runs at like 3-4 fps, completely unplayable. "Wierd" I thought, tried and tried again to load the game, same thing every time, so I started a new game and played for a while, saved, tried to load it up, again down to 3-4 fps or below. The strange thing is that I can play fine until I try to load a game. I haven't tried to play a complete game to the end, because I can't sit in front of the computer that long. Anyone else that have had this problem and managed to fix it?

My specs are:

AMD Athlon XP2600, 2ghz
1gb RAM
Nvidia Geforce FX5700 256mb, slightly overclocked with Riva Tuner.

There's definitely something wrong with the game for loading previous game saves. I could play for like 5 or 6 hours after I started a new game without experiencing any significant problem, but if I restart the game and load a game save, the game will freeze after I finished my first turn. Sort of the same as you. I suspect the problem has something to do with my Sound Blaster sound card. Did you have one of those?

I've got the exact same problem. I don't have a Sound Blaster. The game works fine until I finish my turn then it just locks up. It seems that if the game save gets larger as the game progresses it is more common.

Try erasing all the files in your civ IV cache folder. To get to it, hit start, run, paste "%appdata%\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\cache" in, and hit OK. Then delete all the files in that folder, and run Civ IV and try loading the game.

I tried this fix, but unfortunately didn't work for me. I have heard of others that have had success with this though.

I have the same problem. Though it's on a laptop, so no sound blaster.
Though it seems that if I wait long enough, the game will work again after seeming to look like its permanently locked up.

ok, seems to be the same problem, but I don't have a soundblaster card so I suspect it it something else in my case, I saw that they are going to release a patch so I hope that will help solving the problem, after reading the technical support forum here, there seems to be so many different variants of the graphical lag-issue that users are experiencing, but the basic problem seems to be the low framerates which doesn't necessarily mean too low hardware specs, since people with really high end machines are experiencing the same issues. I hope they will resolve this in the patch.
