1) Xianyang-It was the starting position in china of the silk road?
2) Yumen
3) Nanjing
4) Kamakura
5) Sado
6) Pataliputra- Capital of the magada in the ganges?
7) La Tene-It is in zwitxerland and celts lived there, all i know.
8) Sarai-It was one of those muslim cities of the golden horde in Russia, i think in the volga river near the caspian sea.
9) Khotan
10) Petra was a kingdom in northern arabia-now jordania-
its more important activity was trade. And the city was excavated in rock.

Good luck! :D

7) La Tene - major celtic archaeological site - Walled town, significant finds, was (guessed to be) a major cultural center of the time, in eastern France.

10) Petra - city in Jordan - major spot on middle eastern trade routes, is an architectural wonder carved into the cliffs.

As for the others, I recognize names but can't tell why they were important.

Actually, I was just looking for some replies on those places. Just tell me what you know. ;) BTW, you got both right I think.

For 7), I was actually thinking of that it was the original homeland of the Celts (Am I wrong?). IIRC, the La Tene culture would give rise to the Celtic tribes who later on would migrate westwards, eastwards and southwards. And I thought it was more like in Austria or whereabouts?

For 10), Petra was a major trading center in Arabia. Later thought of itself too highly, turned into a power unto itself and got itself destroyed fr the Romans.

Kublai's answers.

"1) Xianyang-It was the starting position in china of the silk road?"

Nope. Read up on my Chinese discourse again .....

"6) Pataliputra- Capital of the magada in the ganges?"

I assume you mean Maurya. Right. Maybe it's also the capital of Magdha.

"7) La Tene-It is in zwitxerland and celts lived there, all i know."

See earlier answer.

"8) Sarai-It was one of those muslim cities of the golden horde in Russia, i think in the volga river near the caspian sea."

OK, will give you this. Sarai was the capital of the Golden Horde, at least for some time. Their Russian subjects would know - used to send all their tribute here.

"10) Petra was a kingdom in northern arabia-now jordania-

Yep. And it's carved into a cliffside. Remember Indiana Jones? That temple in the stony cliff was Petra.

:( I am sorry, i feel like a cockroach.I should have had more attention.

I think that la-tene is in zwitzerland,I am quite sure.
And pataliputra or patna or patalimbotra -the same-
was the capital of the maghda too.

Don't feel sorry; actually I wasn't even sure if I had gotten to the point about it. :)

Yep, I think too La Tene is in Switzerland or whereabouts. It's actually the name of a modern place, being used to denote the ancient sites around there.

I seriously doubt anybody will be giving further answers so .....

1) Xianyang - capital of Qin and later the Qin Empire. Burnt by Xiang Yu after the fall of the Qin. The new capital for the Han, Chang'an (means long or lasting peace) was later built nearby.

2) Yumen - the Jade Gate in Chinese. This marked the westernmost border post of Metropolitan China. Once you stepped westwards thru here, you're in the barbarian outer lands. It's as much a sign-post in the mind as in the physical world. Somewhere in the Ningxia region today.

3) Nanjing - means Southern Capital in Chinese. Was the capital during some of the 'dynasties' in the aftermath of the disintegration of the Han Empire. Also the capital during the early Ming and later during the Nationalist (i.e. Kuomintang) Republican period.

4) Kamakura - the seat of the Shogun's military govt during the Bakufu. This was during the time around the Mongol invasions.

5) Sado - an island off Japan which was a major gold producer for the Tokugawa regime. Today a tourist attraction and living museum. Maybe some mining.

9) Khotan - one of the oasis states in the path of the Silk Road, lying south of the Taklamakan Desert. Still exists today under Chinese rule.

Thanks for all who tried! :goodjob:

There is a celtic archaeological tradition named after a site in or near Austria - Halstatt, iirc. This term is used more for a tradition of burials, tools, pottery, etc, than for a particular people.

Capital city of the nubs. They used to run away to there whenever the Romans chased them and where never caught. It was where the families of the Nubi traders stayed while the men delivered goods from the Persian gulf into Roman territories. They were fighting the Romans for a long time because they refused to pay taxes. Whever the Romans tried to chase them the nubs ran away to their hiding places. Eventually a group of nubs was caught and told the Romans of all the hidings places they had. The Romans then forced them to join their empire.
In Israel it's known as the "red rock", both bacuse of it's color and because of all the young Israelis that tried to go to there in the 50s, 60s and the 70s and where killed by the Jordanians

I haven't looked into the other people's reply...

1) Xianyang

That should be Tibet I think

2) Yumen
3) Nanjing
4) Kamakura
5) Sado

-- blank for all

6) Pataliputra

India, at the eastern part of the Ganges.

7) La Tene

Switzerland I think, or in very eastern France.

8) Sarai

I've heard the name before, but can't place it, but I think it's in Central Asia.

9) Khotan

That's definately in Central Asia now.

10) Petra

Southern Jordan.

Perhaps worth noting that Nanjing (formerly "Nanking") was also the city made infamous by the Japanese' "Rape of Nanking" during the Sino-Japanese war (early in WWII).
