Im just curious which units considered to be the best, or just your favorite unit :)

Will be interesting to hear your motivation for the best unit...

you can get it relatively early in the game and it dominates all units that come before it...

Marines, Unfortuanly they are late in the game. But they kick much tail.

Alternatively Knights. They Dominate.

Calvary.

No other unit before the calvary I build is nearly as effective in expanding my territory as calvary. They strike, they crush, they move on to repeat the process on the next city and even if the defender does wound the calvary, they retreat so they don't die easy. They flat out own the late mid ages/early industrial and they are far and away the best offensive unit until the tank.

Bombers. Some may argue, but I will explain:
They are useful in island game. Try to take-over a small island near enemy in the start. Bombers will be able to fly from here and bomb enemy infrastructure. Separate all cities you can from other, destroy all rails and mines you can from that place. Don't let to rebuild, bomb everything they builds and start bombing city you separated. Later transport a few troops to their continent (4 riflemens worked for me even if they had tanks and infrantry) and bomb enemy again, if you have enough bombers, you will be able to reduce everyones HP to 1. Then invade and re-base all bombers to newly conquered town. Since it's separated, enemy won't be able to quickly send armies to you. And everything they send you'll be able to bomb and kill with infrantry. Also, bombard other cities and roads around from place you have now. Later take over them and repeat everything.

Yes, these are different units, but they come around the same time in the game for me, and depending on which civilisation I am, I use one of them. They are mobile, plus they have good attack and defence capabilities. Elephants have two added bonuses: no resources needed, and hearing their cries. Midgame units with good movement points just make my day(s).

Artillery are my favourite.
Strictly from a "usefulness" point of view, though, cavalry should probably get the title.

Horsemen.

I find that I need a successful war before the middle ages in order to assure my dominance. Horsemen, although weak, are easy to promote to elite status and easy to keep alive (since they retreat.) One of the most important aspects is that horsemen (like swordsmen) can be rush-built from 1-shield to completion at the cost of one citizen.

If I have a town in very fertile ground (fertile enough that with a granary population can be increased from three to four every second or third turn) then I use that town for all of my military during despotism. (Rush-build temple, granary, barracks, then horsemen.) This strategy effectively destroys the town once you leave despotism, discontent from "past oppression" will last virtually the rest of the game. I figure that the sacrifice of one town is worthwhile.

I use veteran horsemen to make any attack that has a reasonable risk of failure and elites to make any easy kills.

I am enjoying the Roman Legions at the moment. If you can secure that Iron I'm finding maintaining a large number of these flexible units is easy. They're good at attacking and defending early in the game, usher your golden age and as the Romans are militaristic you end up with lots of elite units. You need roads to assist their mobility though.

Samuari. They are the only mobile unit with a defense greater than 3 until mechanized infantry. They are effective through the mid-industrial age at destroying damaged units, and destroying improvements.

...is infantry.

In a "turtle" game, being the first guy with infantry is handy because the enemy can't do much against you. Computers is a long way off from replaceable parts, so you have infantry around a long time.

In an aggressive game in the later stages, sure, you want cavalry or tanks to take other peoples' towns with, but you still want infantry guarding yours.

My main goal in a military game is to get to calvary as soon as possible and use their power and mobility to spread the love to as many other civs around me as possible. Once I hit plastics its all about infantry and artillery :) And hey when this happens Ill still have lots of calvary lying around to scoop up what workers are in the fields.

OK..for UU's..it is a toss up between the Samurai and the Bowmen. I like the added defense bonus for UU's.

For regular units...I dig the Marines. They are just soo cool when they fire their machine guns.:)

I understand if you wonder why I like those hopilites but really, there are some good aspects in using them:
You can build them almost immediatetly and the have 3 in defense, they rule the ancient era.

The Tanks and the Infantrys are also good units but of course you have to play for some time to get them.

Roman Legionary hands down.

Secure an iron source and crank em out. Has the best defense in the ancient area and shares the best offense with the swordsman. You can use them in any situation.

You can really start kicking butt with them in the ancient age to start gainining some territory fast.

Horsemen because they have good movement, retreat, and they upgrade to Knights and then cavalry.

Later on Infantry and artillery are good too.

If I'm doing conquest, I'll go Roman for the Legionary. They become veteran and elite more quickly. You can build them very early. And if you can crank out a gang of maybe ten or so, you can cut through other civs like a hot knife through butter!
Any other type of victory condition and I'd have to go with Knight/Cavalry. They rule their respective eras.
