What's your modern navy like?

In my game, I am currently 1 turn from combustion. This isn't my first modern navy, as I primarily stick to destroyers, aircraft carriers, and battleships. I don't really use cruisers, as they are only decent at speed and power; if I want speed, I use a destroyer, and a battleship if I need power. I don't use subs (normal or nuclear) very much, but then again I've never had nukes, so I may use nuke subs if that changes.

All in all, my question is this: is this a good approach to navy building? Or are there better ways of doing it?

Minimal, no more than I need. Often transports can be send with almost no escorts and even zero.

Lethal bombers make that none viable. They also make it so you can use them to replace ships.

I use destroyers and/or cruisers for escorting transport ships and carriers.

Other than that, a few battle ships can be useful for softening up enemy coastlines, either to weaken cities or destroy tile improvements.

Subs can be useful for scouting the edges of my fleet as a kind of early warning system. Also, they're great for attacking AI fleet convoys because they can pick out the transport ship.

Two battleships and one cruiser (upgraded to AEGIS) per city (obviously those built by the sea).

Transports built and stationed in those cities close to enemy lands (10 per city to ensure at least the transfer of 60 units when at war, plus two extra AEGIS cruisers for protection).

I hate dealing with the navy, but I'll still build a nice set of transports or two (one on the west coast, one on the east) along with an escort of two destroyers and a battleship. If I have the cash and the building power, I'll also build about a half dozen battleships on each coast as protection against a sea based attack.

If a game is nuclear and no one is doing the spaceship (or if space victory is off), I'll set up a few units that are just like this:

3 transports [8 Modern Armor, 10 Mech Inf, 2 settlers, 4 workers]
2 Nuclear Subs, each with a tactical nuke
2 Destroyers
1 Battleship

Then I'll position these stacks around the world, ready to create havoc at a moments notice. It's fun, really, especially if you have a couple ICBMs and the Strategic Missle Defense.

At least one carrier battle group (1 carrier, 4 Jet Fighters, because they can both bomb and intercept, + 2 or 3 AEGIS Cruisers for defense), plus maybe 8-10 transports and an AEGIS Cruiser escort (2-3) for seaborne invasions. I don't build navies for shore defense, period - I've seen too many destroyers sunk by frigates, or battleships by ironclads and destroyers. Instead I rely on artillery to redline them so they run, and when I get cruise missiles I send them to the bottom. Much cheaper.
