It is funny that I came over this thread recently. Just over a week ago, I finally started listening to The Gathering Storm (I love the audio books for the series… Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are great at reading the books). Anyway, that combined with this thread have got me thinking…

What I think I would like would be for a scenario that picks up after the last battle. I am sure that the world would be in chaos politically. Of course, we have another year before we find out exactly what happens. But I do have a few ideas!

First, I have noticed that some have made Tar Valon a Civ… I would make them a City State. (Side note – for anybody wanting to make a scenario based on the Wheel of Time, I would recommend the WOT Encyclopedia as a good resource). I think allying with Tar Valon could provide the player with Aes Sedai and Warders. Warders are Military and Aes Sedai would be Civilian units. They would work by coupling them together and the Aes Sedai would give benefits based on their Ajah. For example, Yellow would provide Healing bonus to the Warder and Green (the “Battle Ajah”) may give a strength bonus. Red would be the only one that does not “link” with the warder unit. I'd have to think about other Ajahs. Maybe Blue could provide additional experience to the Warders!

Another unit could be the Ashaman. They would be the equivalent of Battle Mages. Maybe the Red Ajah of Aes Sedai's ability would be that they can gentle the Ashaman?!?

Well, there is plenty more things that could go into it that I could probably list. But that would probably take forever and make their may not be enough room in this post. Besides, we still have a lot to learn about the ending of the book. I am going of a lot of assumptions here. Still, I think The Wheel of Time: The 4th Age would be something to look into after we get to find out the ending...

Note to moderators... I know that this thread has been buried for a while, so I wanted to bring it up and see if you guys could move it to the newly created Mod sub-forum. I just figure that it being buried is the only reason why it hasn't been moved yet. Anyway, just trying to be helpful... :D

Thanks!

I think that the scenario is the last thing that should be focused on. While it would be cool, I think that it would be mare fun to build and release the map and civilizations first, without the Dragon or the Dark One. Focus more on the world and less on the storyline, which could be made into a scenario afterwards.

Also, I would be happy to help out. I have never made a mod before, but I want to start, and I read a few guides. Im pretty sure that I can handle XMLs.

I second that, focus on the world, not the storyline of the books. I think there's enough to take from already there. OR, maybe make a mod that is easy to make scenarios from?

I've never modded CIV before, but would gladly help with what I can. I started to read Kael's Modders Guide, and made an Andoran Civ (Kingdom of Andor, I think I uploaded it to the mod browser) mainly based on England.

Ive been working on an Illian Civ on and off for a while. Currently Im trying to get the pictures (DOM pic and circular symbol) to work. Im no artisan, so I wont be able to make any Mattin Stepaneos leader scene, but I think that I will just make him look like Washington until I can muster something better.

This is actually great, if anybody else feels like helping, each person could make a Civ or 2. Has anybody else, by any chance, started making somethin WoT related?

Sounds good, there's a map of randland made for civ4 that we could convert and use

Urgh! Ive got everything working for the Illian Cv except the pictures that I try and load (Icon Atlases and the DOM pic). I just get a bunch of pop up messeges everytime I try and do something saying that the game cant load textue.......

Also, the interesting problem that the country of Illian only has 1 named city.....

im a big fan of the books and have read them many times. I have played games and "muds" built around the books and by far the funniest ones are where you can play on the side of evil. So you can control the fades, trollocs, worms, etc. THe shadow as a civ would have to be a must especially for the last battle.

There is alot you are not going to be able to do in the story in civ5. THe stories are too rich in detail wrapped in complex plots to ever hope to translate it perfect to game.

I would keep Aes Sedai As A Civ because of the importance and the love of people being Aes Sedai. I would make aes sedai ranged units. No range penalties. YOU could have a promotion called "strength in the power" that increases range. Warders could be a second UU. but i wouldn't do that. Undoubtedly in game practice would lead to an army of warders with no aes sedai around. THat simply would not fit imo.

The problem with andor is that it is very big in the books, but not necessarily the most powerful. In the game, having alot of cities means more power. (some respects) Tear which is another powerful civ in the book is basically a one city country. (Godan is there i guess). So i would make a few fictional towns to help with that. They would not violate the story.

The whitecloaks i doubt should be a civ but maybe a result of a wonder. Fortress of Light, for example.

Maybe the dragon reborn can be a result of a tech "Prophecies of the dragon" and you can build a wonder called "Birthplace of the dragon". This allows the dragon reborn unit. Yes he could then be born in tear. That would allow you to play any civ and still be able to have the dragon reborn unit. You could make the scenario instantly fail if he dies or just have to rebuild him. (maybe a message of critcally injured and has to return to heal)

Im studying for an AP exam this week, so not at the moment, but after that, sure. Maybe we could actually set, you know, goals and deadlines this time.

I searched for Wheel of Time on this forum and never found this thread! :O I've been working on a big Wheel of Time mod for about a month now, which I think a lot of the WoT fans here should quite enjoy. It's still not playable yet (new One Power-driven sections of the tech tree are sort of incomplete and all over the place) but I've got 12 civs, 14 or so minor civs, 12 leaders, UUs and UBs for almost all of them, some cool new mechanics and stuff. I'm thinking I should create a separate topic for it since it's not a scenario (though I do plan to include scenarios eventually) but rather a conversion. (I want people to be able to play on random maps with WoT civs and WoT-influenced gameplay.) Unfortunately I'm a university student going into exam season now, so progress will be slow, but after that I should be able to power ahead and have something to release for people to playtest. :D (Balancing so many new mechanics should be good fun, and getting the AI to use them properly is already a serious part of my design considerations.)

If people are interested in hearing what I've actually done already, even though the mod itself won't be downloadable/playable, I can post a topic with detailed info later today. ;)

That's great! If you need help, let me know. I'm a pretty inexperienced modder, but Im very determined to make sure that WoT mod is available.

A key thing to make this kind of MOD fun would be to disable research as technological progression.

Yes, I know in the books Rand wants to create repositories of knowledge, and is creating reward systems for technological advancements--i.e. the steam engines scene.

However, the majority of the series is focused on magical research and magical progress. So a traditional research/tech tree that impacts the majority of your troops would not be fun.

What are your thoughts?

Maybe there could be a lot fewer techs, and it takes a lot longer to research each one. There could also be a lot of different types of troops. Instead of, as in the regular Civ, a warrior eventually becoming a longswordsman after many upgrades, there could be a class type for Asha'man, one for regular soldiers, one for Aes Sedai, etc. Each of which would only have around 3 stages of upgrades (Soldier -> Dedicated -> Asha'man)

As it happens, I've been considering and making notes for the design of a WoT mod recently as well. It's true that technological progress in the story isn't all that much, but the books only cover less than 3 years of time--a far cry from what a Civ game is designed to model. I'd have the tech tree be much smaller and be complemented by a One Power research tree. Technology could advance from a fairly low level (representing the post-Breaking period) to what we see in the books, including things like Dragons and steam engines, and maybe moving to Age of Legends technology as a "future" era.

This is basically exactly what I've been working on lol. ;) Sorry for not posting my stuff in a topic yet, but exams are ramping up now, so it'll probably be sometime in June before I make any more progress. :(

I guess I feel kind of like Dr. Forrester discovering that Joel came up with the same invention, but then, I don't know what the sort of social conventions here are, so maybe it's not any kind of big deal. Or maybe forces could be joined...
