When did you first play Civ?

Me and a mate discovered the wonder that is civ back in 92, 93

HE had 3! old 386's - his dad had salvaged them from somewhere and brought the home - so we installed CIV on a couple of machines and played at same time.

Those were the days

1990/91
at amiga 500

man, i was jubilating when i get my amiga2000 with a 50MB Quantum HD and get fed up playing "DJ" with that 4 discs ...

when i finally changed to my 1st PC (AMD pentium clone K5 - 90) in around 1995 and win95 OS
i 1st bought CiV II when it came out -
i was SOOOO frustrated about the humble and confusing "gameplay" that i quickly changed back to CiV part 1 and play it again & again from time to time nowadays.

in between i was playing FREECiV (linux CiV 2 clone) online at freeciv server a.s.o.

i was always looking for a civnet copy but did miss to buy it when i finally found it in a game package.
after all i realized that there where a NET scene playing CiVnet in between 1996 <-> 1998

i would like to know ("more") about the differences in gameplay civilization 1 & civnet at singleplayer... would be interesting to play another easy-to-play-variation of civ.

anyway - in 1998 or so i came back playing civ1 because i found finally the 474. (03) englisch version that allowed map editing with the map editor (freeware) for civ1 a.s.o.

on 233 MHz MMX Intel or 500 MHz AMD it became difficult to play CiV 1 because the game tends (like colonization) to grab all prozessor speed - so that high tech prozessors turn HOT (this was very evil at my 233 MHz AMD - it nearly killed the machine those days)

so i bought/installed an old 486er to run the game more smoothly - that old tseng graphic card (65.*** colors, 1MB RAM) is doing great with a Flatscreen :D

the 98lite "micro" installation (98lite.com & win98se) at ol' 16MB (x)RAM made it possible to use a dos window and several tools like the map editor again.

i use sid's colonization game at this machine too and nothing else.

It was the year of 1999 for me. I have played it a lot since. Taking a year long break because i accidentally removed the game, so I had to borrow a disc again. Anyway been playing now again and I love it. I also own Civ 3, tho I have not played it a lot, will this weekend tho!

Let's see. I was first introduced to the Civ for Mac demo in eighth grade (1994-95 school year). I played the demo relentlessly, but was frustrated in that I was never able to get more than two wonders - Colossus and Lighthouse. The following summer, I got the full version of Civilization for Mac. Much enjoyment ensued.

Fast forward a few years - for my birthday, my dear sister buys me Civ2 MP Gold Edition for Mac, and my life is awesome. I look at Civ 3 and see spots where it would be nice to have features from Civ 2.

In 2001-2002, my dad buys Civ: Call to Power. The game is quickly rendered uninteresting due to the "leemur" cheat. Months later, he buys Civilization 3 for the Dell he acquired. I play it while on holiday from college, and love it. The next summer, for my birthday, Dad buys me Civ 3 - Mac version. I spent so much time playing that game that summer that a) I got a RSI in both of my wrists b) it put me in hot water with the girlfriend and c) I did a piss-poor job in the REU in which I was participating that summer.

Back when it came out, 1991 or whenever it was, on my old (and sadly no longer with me) Amiga 500+.

I'd read the reviews and was really looking forward to it.

I didn't enjoy it at first due to having to swap disks all the time, but not long after we got a nice 80MB GVP HD.

Then came the ASSIGN nightmare after the HD installation, but it was soon sorted and I really got into it.

I believe it was the first thing that got installed on our A1200 too.

Must get round to tracking down a copy of the Windows version.

I started playing like waaay long ago!

civ was actualy the 1st game I ever played!I was realy little, maybe only 5-6,and I was annoying my father. So to get me off his back,he showed me the game and taught me to play a lil.

after mah 1st time however I couldn't play for a very long time, till a few yrs later I discovered it again on some CD,I immediatly recognized it!

Can't remember exactly when - maybe 8 years ago? It was the first PC graphics game I played and it took me quite a while to get familiar with the interface and strategy!

Back on the amiga in 91 i think. Still play a little civ1 now but mainly civ 2. Not many games you still play after 12 years are there!!

94-95. An older friend introduced me too it. I can still remember the rush of my mighy militia defeating eight barbarian horsemen! I loved that game :)

played Civ from the beginning on an Amiga, been playing civ and civ clones ever since, Civ2, Civ3, SMAC, etc etc only one civ clone didn't grab my attention in all that time and that was one that had 3 levels (ground, sky and underworld?)

anyway love the game and anxiously waiting for C3C

I first played it in 1995 I beleve. My mom, got the SNES cartige at a garage Sale. I played it and was hooked. The grafics were old, but the game was good. Then in 1998, when I got my new Computer, I was at Best Buy and saw II, I just bought it.

started with civ1 in 1992 on my 386, 40 MB HD. It is amazing, the fun that I had in the first games cpuldn't be matched by any other Civ Incarnation I played since that time.

I dont remember the exact date, arround 1993/1994.

At first I didnt knew nothing about it, but it was interesting.

Then learning and learning :)

I realized that it was the best game I had for my 286 :)

Still good nowadays :)

January 1994 - It will be 10 years next month!

Hmmm. Its interesting - I started playing Civ - my favourite game of all time in 1994. My second favourite game of all time is Elite, which I started playing in 1984 - so I wonder what game coming out in 2004 will make it into my favourites to make the pattern hold? Civ 4? (nah. not if 2 and 2 are anything to judge by)

Started playing a few weeks ago, and I must say... it's got to be the all time greatest strategy game. Compared to this, Starcraft and all that other crap is NOTHING. I hope to get better and kick ass.

My first game was when civ came out. My dad bought it at the local Babbages and I was about 6. Im 19 now lol and am still hooked more than ever.

I joined in the Civilization Army in 1994, when I had my PC386, 40Mhz (good times :D) or when I chanching to a 486, I can't remeber my computer, but I still remember playing civ for hours and hours.
My favourtite civ was The Russians, because I didn't like to fight against the White Team (Russians or Romans). The last battle always against Aztecs or Americans, all the battle using Nukes, the Gold Age never returns :king:

I can't remember the year, but I first played civ I with our original pentium (the original pentiums were 60 mhz) :D

It had a 4 cd-changer drive, and we tested it with a "Empire: Award Winners" pack which had Civ, Lemmings and Frontier Elite II. The minute I saw civ, I was hooked :D

1992 when my brother lent me his Amiga (remember them? :D) Despite the fact that the random map generator seemed a bit screwed (I kept getting one of a selection of about 20 maps) and it took a good 15 minutes to load I was hooked as soon as I figured out what I was supposed to do....
