When did you first play Civ?

I think it was in 1992.

:bday: :cooool:

I remember my first experience with civ was with civ1. By the way, that was about a year ago! My soon to be physics teacher was fortunate enough to have a copy on one of his laptops for the school. Unfortunately, I could not get a copy on to a new computer, so the game languished until I found a good hardcopy. (Wont tell where. ;) ) Since this was an old game, I searched for a sequel. At the time I remember I was more concered about finding Pax Imperia only to discover that it was a mac game. Doh! Anyway, I had found civ2 by an associate of teammate (academic competition) of mine. This game was expansive, but still old. I played one game at a friends house before I discovered that there was a third version. THIRD?! And it just (kinda) came out?! Party! I quickly bought a copy and have been enjoying the bliss that is civ. Thanks for reading.

Theres a thread like this going on in the Civ 3 forum so I'll just cut and paste :) -

On the Commodore Amiga early 90's. It came on 4 floppies and when you started a new game it took about 20 minutes to 'build' the map/world.

While you were waiting you got this picture of the globe with a story about the 'founding of a new planet' blah blah flashing up above the world line by line.

It really p1ssed me off the amount of time it took to actually start a game but once the game had started I was hooked like a crackhead

Never knew civ was available for the Amiga. I still have my old Amiga 500 !! I never use it but I refuse to sell it/throw it away/give it away. Great comp that was. I'm even considering buying an old C64 again. I got one the first month they came out from my father. He wanted to buy a vic 20 first but decided to wait for the new model  64K memory, I think my toaster has more memory nowadays

This post is a bit off topic i guess....

1993 or 94 I'd guess. I spent great times with it. And I started to translate it and learned English very well.

Oooh yes, My recollection of the game is patchy, as is my memory of PC civ 1 but graphically i bet there isnt that much between them, in-game at least. But the old girl only has the same processor as a Sega Genesis/Megadrive (motorola 68000 - 7mhz (ish)) and so building the world was just a draaaaaaaag. I cant recall there being much late game slowdown tho.

You know what you need to do - stop considering and start buying, immediately. Ive got 5, but only 3 work. Pick 'em up at boot sales with stacks of games for peanuts :).

Yeh, I had civ back on the Amiga. Slow as a wet weekend. Even moving a unit one square seemed to take forever (kinda made having wars suck).

No idea how they managed to get it so slow since the Amiga was a rather powerful machine when it came to games.

I suspect they actually did stupid things like using the processor for blitting instead of the copper... Probably just recompiled the original source code with a few tweaks to make it work on the Amiga. :-(

Least the Amiga version didnt suffer from the population bug :-)

Also do you remember how the original Civ was on 2 floppy disks?

Two? TWO???? I had FOUR! Stupid double density drives.

For me, it was 1991. I was homeless, of all things, and crashing at a buddy's place. He had it on his computer, and I was instantly hooked.

Then, after moving halfway across country, I found a copy and played it where ever I could. Kinda lapsed for a while, and ended up getting CivIIMGE, and played that for a year or so. Been playing Civ III pretty solid for the past ten months.

You're absolutely right. Maybe I'll be able to pick up a disk drive too. Great 5,25 inch disks that you could use 2 sided when u punched a second whole in em.

Wow, its good to see some people of my kind revealing their endless nights with Civ. :)

Mine started in '93 (8th grade) on a 33Mhz 386 PC. Woohoo. It was honestly the only reason I was on that PC.

And I soon played side by side with Master of Orion as well. Those were the days..

Welcome deeptrance!
I still have a 486/33 (1991) whose only function is to host Civ1!

I think I first started playing Civ around 1995 or so. I was dating a guy whose kid brother showed me the game. I didn't have my own PC at the time. The boyfriend started to become a real jerk but I was so hooked on Civ that I stayed with him a few months longer just so I could go to his family's house and play Civ all afternoon.
I never actually owned Civ, by the time I bought a PC, Civ2 had just come out, sO I just went with that.

It was 1994 (for the MAC version to come out) and I was in fourth grade. Now i'm a senior in High School and still play it like mad...I'm such a loser ;-). Maybe I should get out more...it's been 8 years.

Last week for a $1.50 brand new sealed at K.B. Toys. I have Civ3 too. But I find the original to be very interesting.

I'm not sure if this post is still going but I first played Civ 1 on my grandads machine a couple of years ago. It was complete luck, I found a bundle of old games hidden on one of his shelves including Civ 1, Sam & Max and Kings Quest 4 or 5! I got hooked after a few weeks of working out what was going on with no manual!

I think it was 92. I'm still proud about my 253% highscore, I think I still have a floppy with the save.
