When do you make Guerilla over Infantry, or submarines over Battleships?

I don't the point of gurilla as a build, unless you don't have rubber. Same cost as infantry, can't be updated, and has 4 less defence. Do you ever make these when you have ruber?

Also, how good is the submarine, or nuclear sub? It semms the only adavatge of subs, other than carrying nukes is being hard to see. Can somone tell me why they build subs when they have lower defence and offenisive power (besides for scouting, or detecting enemy subs).

The simple answer is; If you have rubber, don't build Guerillas.
Guerillas serve 2 main purposes imo:
1)They prevent the ludicrous swordsman in Industrial/Modern age occurrence (along with the Med. Infantry) ie as a unit you can upgrade leftover (in their time useful) Med. Infantry to instead of disbanding them (tho most players would disband or suicide them anyway I suspect).

2)A resourceless Unit that the struggling AIs can build in Industrial age so they aren't 'totally' pathetic ( you know, the AIs with only a couple of cities left after your major cav. offensive).

Since most players will quickly aquire rubber if Rep. Parts arrives and they are without (or give up the game),Guerillas are rarely going to be an attractive build option.

I usually play pangea maps so I can't really comment on subs and their usefulness (my navy usually=2 Battleships/Carrier I can see a use for; thats it!)

I build subs for three reasons.

1. They're great for blockading a port. Since the enemy can't see them except with another sub, a destroyer or an Aegis cruiser, subs can blockade with little fear of being detected and destroyed.

2. When the enemy surges his transports, loaded with troops, to invade my area, subs can make that very costly.

3. I'm a retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief. When I was in the Navy, I was a submariner. I have to have at least one submarine.

Ah, YNCS, you live in Groton?
I use subs for attacking barbarian galleys. Also, they're the only way to move my tactical nukes around to the islands.

my main use of subs is defensive. most of the time i'm looking for other enemy subs. when i find them there should be another vessel near by to take it out. i like to keep the waterways free for troop transport/carriers.

well my subs are much more useful.
I mod the subs abilities and they're a bit stronger, besides, they have the bombing ability (+1) not very strong but they can act like WWII subs.
when an invasion menaces my lands the subs get into the enemy convoys and "hasta la vista baby"
I really love naval warfare, in my games, navy is very important.

I always have a couple loaded nuclear submarines for when it goes pear shaped or I an just board and want to nuck someone.

subs are totally kick ass. when i play a continents map i always make a gigantic navy. i always have a sub net to detect incoming ships out in the ocean and i keep subs around my coast to detect enemy subs lurking around.

nuclear subs are critical for protection of carriers and transports because they can keep up with them (movement 4) whereas diesel subs can't. let's say you have a carrier, 3 destroyers, and 2 transports going to attack some islands. bring along 2 nuclear subs as extra escort and you can be sure you won't be sneak attacked by enemy subs and you will know if they see you coming.

also, YNCS, destroyers cannot see submarines. they detect them and open fire if they are in their path rather than going around them if they are enemy subs.

go navy!

I use nuclear subs alot. They are very usefull for nuclear strikes before ICBMs.

I'll use them when I'm invading another land mass

where-

_ = open sea
L = land
B = Battleships
T = Transports
x = Submarines

make a picketline of subs and maybe have a forward scout of a single AEGIS Cruiser if you're feeling brave. use the battleships for bombarding.

In an ideal invasion I'll have advanced air cover as well so Jet Fighters can scout for the enemy surface fleet as well, and with the use of bombers, you can free up some battleships to help defend the transports.

Submarines are really useful in my opinion. I'm a huge fan of Tom Clancy novels so that makes me like sub's lol.

they're also good for Tac Nuke's as well. send about 5 out with nukes and head for the ice at the top and bottom of the screen. if they stay there then they can move about alot safer than what they would be if they moved across the open ocean

I virtually never build Subs - their attack strength is just too low.
If I have rubber I do not build guerillas. If I don't have rubber I invade in order to obtain it.

Neither are much use as far as I am concerned although if I have loads of loot, I might upgrade lesser units to guerillas.

I thought their introduction in PTW was just for use by the poor little AI that has no rubber or oil and cannot find a way to get them.
