You need to set your graphics settings to med or high. Either that or it's because you're in Modern era.

Units in modern era seem to be depicted by a single unit.

one of the options is to show as a single unit. go back into the options, graphics(i believe) and remove the check mark for the top one which is to show only a single unit.

I've found that whenever you adjust graphics settings....at least when you turn them down....it automatically activates some of the options like single unit graphics. You have to go back into the graphics options to turn it off.
