When is a good time to really use nuke?

Karl_t_great
I had the Persians build SDI the other night in a game. I was rolling over the other civs, with stacks of MA. The Persians were the only civ close to me in tech, and military. Sure enough, as soon as i send a couple ICBMs his way to soften up a couple of his big border cities, they get zapped. Pissed me off, they werent going to go easy. Made for a good game though.

I find it's never a good time to use Nukes.... as most people have said, The AI's hit you in a big way if you use them. I had an expereince of this, 3 civs left, I finish war with one and my previous ally declares war on me. I use a nuke for an easy and effective victory, and now both are at war. Not pretty, and a grim reminder of what real Nuclear war would do.

never!

maybe it's like....uh....wrong.

i couldn't face my people if i had to tell them in the pressconference the day after, that our glorious army mass-slaughterd our next door neighbours with nukes.

but i never reach the game till the endstages. now for the first times i managing to keep ahead, so lets see if i will abandon my principels.

I try to never use nukes, but I did find them useful a few games ago. I was second in population, but first in technology, and was building a spaceship. I saw that I would win via the space race, but did not want to finish behind another civ in pop, so I built nuclear subs, tactical nukes, and ICBM's. One turn before the space ship was finished, I annhiliated my closest competitor--nuked every city (around 25). I remember that the Mongols also declared war against me, so I threw them a few glowing bones for good measure. When I won, I had rocketed (pun intended) ahead in population, and won the game on all counts.
Generally, though, I only have nukes as a deterrent. The results (in both reputation and pollution) are too serious to take lightly.

A good time too use nukes is when you see america coming with a stack of 70 modern armor and they are furious with you. 2 tactical nukes and they've lost all attack abilities

Yay! an arms race! I build up my defenses on all my border cities, and begin rush-building spaceship. At the same time, I build a few ICBMs and/or tactical nukes. When I have like two turns left to finish the last part (be VERY sure it's the last!) I launch the missiles and see how everything plays out. It's usually best to switch to communism right before this so you cities won't fall into civil disorder.

Heres a nifty little trick, pull up to an offshore AI with a dozen mech infs (In transport) mountian. After the AI sends it['s massive counterinvasionary force, load your transports with the troops and nuke that square, you've killed off an immportant part of ther defense

Damn right!

I'm not afraid to use nukes if some stinking rival Civ suddenly attacks me.

I did the same thing, and obliterated 2-3 large stacks of Roman Infantry and Mec. Armour with 1 nuke. All I was doing was protecting my Oil resource, on a separate island. Then virtually every other Civ diclared war on me. Arrrghhh!

A good time to use the nuke is when playing against the last surviving A.I. That way nobody else can hate you.

^^ what he said.

also, if you're going for a Conquest victory and want to end it, a sneaky way to do so is to sign a ROP with the last remaining civ, put about a hundred tanks all throughout their land, then nuke all their cities in one turn and march in with the tanks. Very cheap and easy, but it gets the job done!

I miss the old siren from civ 2 thogh :-\

lol I do too

Once try a game when India which is polite to me backstab me, drop a modern amour next to my second largest city(no defenders) and raze it. I am so piss off that I lauch all my nukes available (about 2 for every Indian cities, 3 for capital). I think Indians has about 18 - 25 cities (half of world map). After all the massive lauching in 1 single turn, eliminate the world largest nation in 2 turns (no more defense, no match to my 40 modern armour) but the world turns into a total desert (no more green can be seen on map anymore) Nuke make long war short :)

I was playing a game a little while ago that I was about to win through SR. So, just for fun, I decided to launch ten ICBM's [I had been stockpiling in case of WWIV (it was a very bloody game)] on the Spanish, a huge nation overseas that I HAD been at peace with. I had a very good time watching their cities w/ a pop. of 12 be reduced to rubble. A few turns later, I won through SR. Basically, I only use 'em if I'm about to win, never as a means to that victory.

On the flip side, if you are neutral in a global nuclear war, it can be VERY helpful (except for global warming).

In my last game, I was stuck on a small island and the world war in a great nuclear war for about the last 50 turns. I quietly stockpiled my forces while the other nations are being blown apart. The nations were utterly defenseless while my troops marched into their cities without a fight.
