As japan building the sistine chapel....
You make your entire empire happy AND you build some of the most important wonders out there while getting the cash rolling in

I don't think it matters so much what govt you're in for your GA. What matters is that when you do it you have a lot of cool stuff to build. Otherwise, you'll be wasting your building power.

For civs with ancient UU's it's not so bad, as it means they will really have a LOT of those UUs. Ever seen your civ swamped by dozens and dozens of jaguar warriors when you have one fifth as many units? That's what the extra early GA is for :-)

Then again, I also prefer the GA in the late middle ages/beginning of industrial, because of the quicker industrialization/wonder building. Normally, after that I am ahead enough that I can build most wonders before other people, so it's not a problem anymore that late into the game.

Btw, for those who don't know what triggers a GA:
- successful use of a UU in combat
- building a wonder that can trigger a GA for your type of civ. Eg a religious civ would get a GA from a religious wonder.

Voted republic. If I'm playing a civ w/ an early UU, I usually don't bother trying to time it. Its coming as soon as a conflict arises. Now, timing in republic is important to me. The best for me is to have a GA when Sun Tzu and Leonardo's Workshop can be built.

Having a Golden Age with a republic can get you all the improvements for the Ancient Era and build cathedrals (once you get monotheism of course) quickly.
