i've had a few ways that work well.
1) worker-worker-settler if i have a lot of forests to chop (fairly common in BTS). nice if you start with mining especially
2) worker->warriors til hit happy cap-worker-worker-settler-worker-worker-settler-etc. nice if you have a lot of room to expand and are not pressed for space. warriors fogbust and 2 workers per city means you'll get your cities hooked up and tiles improved quickly
3) worker-warrior-warrior-settler-worker. nice if you want to rush and are looking to get a 2nd city out earlyish. first worker goes with settler to develop new city, second worker starts chopping axes/chariots once it is able and finishes tile improvements in capital if necessary (also helps build roads to connect cities if necessary)
I would say these are my three standard inland openings. On the coast you want workboats, GLH so you won't be expanding as fast really at first, but once GLH is in you can expand worker-settler or worker-worker-settler at a pretty good pace.
re: COL
I do agree that currency is a better horizontal expansion tech, but CoL is not without its merits. If you are organized, for example, whipping courthouses for 2 pop is nice. But even if you are not organized, CoL can be helpful for recovering your economy. One useful national wonder that is often overlooked/delayed is the forbidden palace. If you build 2-3 cities early and capture 3-4 cities then it is only another 1-3 cities that you need to build and have produce a courthouse before you can build the FP in say the enemy capital to help defray costs. Nice if you have marble and/or are industrious. Caste system at a time when pacificism becomes available through a bulbed GS is also nothing to sneeze at. On top of that, caste system is generally a less beaker-intensive route and can more easily be taken off of the oracle.
Of course currency is of immediate benefit and has a variety of ways to help your gold situation and is the preferred tech for expanding imo. But CoL has still helped me a lot in many of my games. Especially if you are going SE, CoL is quite nice.
