The Darkest abyss...
I'm currently playing a contients map on Warlord difficulty and im in the late middle ages when should i chande government?

At the moment you get your hands on the tech. Republic would be another theme, but monarchy has no drawbacks to despotism.

Everything is better than Despotism.

So it depends on taste and playstyle:

I went for Monarchy - Communism usually. :)

Still, I do not see myself as a Warmonger.

Might go Monarchy - Facism next time.

Republic: Was toned down in Conquests!

But still, it is a middle of the road form of Democracy for me.

Well, to come back to your question:

After you have finished a Wonder and if not in a very critical war - immediately.

Despotism is a hindrance for your growth and developement.

As Endureth said, Next time you load up the game. However, I would disagree with what others said. For your other games, I would not advise switching immediately as a rule of thumb. For example, if you're in the middle of a testing war, it would not be advisable to change goverments. Same goes for if you are about to build a wonder -- which you shouldn't do btw, just let the AI build 'em. Also, if you have a large army, and your cities aren't all that big, you would lose quite alot of Gold due to unit support. It would be wise to wait for them to grow.
Although in my current game, I switched to monarchy alot earlier than usual. I am the Zulu's, and (slowly ;)) rushed the Japs with Impi. Since this triggered a Golden Age, it was a good idea to be a Monarchy. I would have lost out on alot of extra shields/commerce if still in Despotism.

Hope that helps :)

Note: You should have changed Goverments waaay before now

As somone who moved from Warlord to Regent and soon on to the next higher level I have to (in general) agree with the concept of not building Wonders. Try playing a game without building any Wonders. You will see that you will have much stronger military and no waste (like when the AI beats you out in a Wonder race). By not having Wonders and lots of units you will be forced to come up with a strategy to win and you will have the units to force your will when necessary.

You will be at the Regent level soon and you will like it!

I disagree on not building wonders.
For instance, in my current emperor game, I got the GLib and leaned back as the techs came pouring in. If you're off to a bad start on one of the higher difficulty levels, crucial wonder grabbing is often a game-turner. You need to be selective and prebuild for it, though.

I disagree about changing govt's asap. I change govs once my expansion is done. So if i can found one more city and If I need the build time, I will continue in despo untill this has occured. I, also, try for a couple size 7 cities and have a couple markets before switching but this is not absolutely needed.

As far as the wonder race, you need figure out what wonders you really want and what wonders can be changed to another wonder. However, on higher levels, I do not bother with ancient age wonders unless I get a sci leader.

As a very general rule of thumb here's my 10 cents:

1. The more of a warmonger you are the less imperative it is for you to quickly switch out of Despotism - and Monarchy is 'usaully' the better choice.

2. The more of a peacefull builder you are, the more important it is to switch out of Despotism asap - and Republic is 'usually' the better choice.

3. The higher the difficulty level (warmonger or peacefull builder)the more imperative it is to switch out of Despotism asap - and 'usaully' Monarchy has 'slight' advantage over Republic. Also, for warmongers, the higher the difficulty level the greater the value of Communism/Fascism in the later game - 'usually'.

:nono:
If you are a warmonger, and you have an early UU, then it is even more important to change quickly.

GAing in monarchy with an ancient age UU can make a HUGE difference but on higher level games this may not be pratical.

Switching govs will be alot easier when the Conqusets patch fixes the "Government will be under control in 8 turns"

I switch to Monarchy right away. As for wonders, I'm a conqueror so i built pyramids and sun tzu, and the great library to keep anyone else from getting it, then sped to military tradition, turned off science to produce a horde of sipahi (ottoman UU). then i sent them off to conquer the world, turned science back on and rushed to steam engine. This was on a Warlord level game, I doubt it would work at higher levels.
