Where can I buy Civ One?

That would be illegal. But buying it is impossible since it is sold nowhere... I've heard a rumour... somewhere... that if you email someone

he might email it to you

This has been known to happen before, but of course it's illegal.

Easy. You buy it from Amazon!

If you're in Europe like me, you can buy Civ1 from www.amazon.co.uk. You'll find it bundled in with a game called "Worms" and it sells for £8.99.

If you're in the US, you can buy it from www.amazon.com. You'll find it bundled as the "Ultimate Strategy Archive" with a load of other stuff and it sells for $29.99.

Yeah, I saw the game in one of those 5 in one bundles.
Hey TTG, sorry, I didn't know it was illegal to download. I thought it was a freeware already, since it's such a classic.

It's really no problem. Just keep it out of this forum. There are sites for that, and this is not one of them. You can, of course, EMAIL me about this subject.

If you're in the US and want Civ1, www.amazon.com is currently out of "Ultimate Strategy Archives"

However instead, I suggest you might try "CD Access" at http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/ultstrat.htm where they're selling the same bundle for $10 less at $19.95!

The pack includes:
* Civilization
* Railroad Tycoon Deluxe (also Sid Meier)
* X-COM: UFO Defense
* Heroes of Might and Magic
* M.A.X. Mechanized Assault & Exploration
* Conquest of the New World Deluxe
* Dark Colony
* Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games

European Amazon is OK with 1-2 weeks ordering time.

Apparently Civ I has been reissued on CD and
is available from CD-Access and Chips & Bits.
It costs $9.95, I believe. I don't know
what if any effort has been made to make
it compatible with newer sound cards. Probably none, I would guess.

I'm sure you could email Microprose and order it from them. Hell, i just emailed Koei Inc. who makes tons of video games, and i asked if they had Aerobiz Supersonic for sale, and they sent it to me for free!!!!

In my former job as an abandonware webmaster, I attempted to deal with micropose. They wouldn't give me a copy. They wouldn't sell me a copy. They wouldn't tell me where to buy a copy, they wouldn't give me tech support on the game after I finally found it in a bargain bin in the 50th store I visited, and they were in general quite rude. It is companies' disrespect for games like this that created abandonware and maintain it to this day.

I really have to agree with TTG on the lack of commitment to previously released software. It seems to me that there should be some kind of standard that states once any software program is not published for a specific period of time it becomes 'obsolete' therefore automatically becoming freeware.

Let's face it...if it isn't supported anymore, and it isn't sold anywhere what's the point in keeping it out of the hands of a small few who would actually buy the early version game (possibly again to replace a lost copy or for others who never knew it existed) and be perfectly happy with it.

I think there should be upgrades to Civ I as a game in it's own category such that it takes a different direction than Civ II did...just my opinion.

go there you can download Civ1 for free!!!
I don't know if it's just some Danish law, but five years after the games release, and if you can no longer buy it, then it's free, there are a bunch of other games there that you can download and they are all for free.
I know I got my Civ1, Colonization, Centurion and many other games there......

Just to make sure, I just checked it with the Danish police and talked to their internet department, the site is totally legal!!!!

I'm serious about these forum rules, people. I support abandonware 100%, but the strategy-gaming.com network does not. It is illegal, and any such activity on this forum or other civfanatics.com is serious. I will try to delete any URLs for illegal software that are posted here, and if you try to post them in spite of me I will have your account deleted.

Please read the forum rules/FAQ as it explains what is appropriate conduct in these forums.

If you have problems with these policies, you can email me your concerns at civ1@civfanatics.com

And about things being illegal/legal in other countries... it is only legal if the country in question has not signed the Berne convention, which I believe 99% of all countries HAVE signed. Even if the site is hosted on a server in a non-Berne convention country, if YOU are from a Berne-convention country it is still illegal for YOU to download the files. The only way it would be legal is if both the webmaster and the visitor were from countries that had not signed the Berne convention. I am pretty sure every developed nation, including all of Europe and North America are in the Berne convention, so you must be mistake about Danish law.
