I was wondering if the relation of the Octopus Overlords to the gods has been explained anywhere. I know they are a nod to the Cthulhu mythos, but has this being incorporated into the grander FFH theology? Are they demons working for one of the gods, a different group of entities, what?

They are the dreams and nightmares of the sleeping God/Angel of Water, Danalin. Danalin has been sleeping since his favored people, the Aifons, died out rather than restart the gods' war, and Hastur (archangel of Mammon) is affecting his dreams.

I don't think it's known whether Danalin is directly dreaming of the Overlords as well as Hemah, or if the Overlords are the dreams of Hemah, who is the subject of Danalin's dreams.

In the Trivia Thread Kael confirmed that Danalin is not dreaming about the Overlords, but about a fellow Effective Dreamer by the name of Hemah. It is implied that the Overlords were created from the dreams of Hemah. They are not controlled by any god, but Hastur, the Lord of Nightmare, the Archangel under Mammon, God of the Mind, (Hastur is probably also the father of Mardero) is whispering in Danalin's ear and corrupting his dreams, thus indirectly corrupting Hemah's dreams and creating the Overlords.

A little off topic but I found an interesting graphic from http://shop.webomator.com/. A Celtic Cthulhu
