Has anyone else noticed the relative lack of coal sqaures -- I've played three games now (and discovered the 'steam engine'), and I can't build railroads because there are (it seems to me) only a couple mountain squares with coal on the entire map, and always on squares deep in another country. The game rules state that I cannot build railroads unless I have a source of coal, which I've read can be found in mountain or swamp squares.

Is there something that I'm missing?

There usually isn't too much coal, but its not as rare as iron or oil.

You should make some cavalry and conquer if you need coal.

That's funny that you should say that, because I have never had a problem getting oil. It may just be that I am bigger by the time you can see it, but it's never been a problem in my games. Coal I have found to be the most elusive resource by far. My first game, I discovered one of three coal deposits on the map, and the only one not taken, and it dissapeared three turns after I built a city near it and hooked it up with a harbor:mad:

It depends how many civs you play with. The more you play the more resources are aloccated to that map.

I know coal is quite often found burried under the jungle. I never had much problem getting coal. Sure, sometimes I don't have it, but that don't last long. I kill for it. Just me though.

Oil is the one I'm constantly struggling with. Keeps vanishing too. I love it when I go through a whole bunch of trouble to settle this messed up area, get a worker out, build a road to the oil source just to see it fizzle out a few turns later

I hoped we all knew by now that the resource rates Firaxis gave us are an unrealistic non-historical joke, especially for coal and iron. Get them up to 171 and 177 in the Editor.

You can also find on other forums new Art files that makes them easy to find, instead of invisible, which is the way Firaxis gave us coal.
