Which city will my Holy City end up in...?

When I know I'm about to found a religion, is there a way to predict or control which of my cities will be the holy city? Or is it random?

-- whoops, I think I found an answer in another forum:

For each city a random number is rolled
There's something (I think 1) added to that number for each point of population.
That number is divided by a factor based on the number of religions already in that city.
That number is divided by 8 for the capitol.

the city with the largest number after all that is the holy city.

Generally, that means the largest non-capitol without a religion will end up the holy city. If every city has the same number of religions, it will generally be the largest city, but it starts being more a crap shoot at that point unless one city is a lot larger.

Interesting, because it seems to me like it's usually one of my newest (or least developed?) cities that founds the religion.

I believe that FfH changed one thing in the calculation of where the holy city will be: Kuriotate Settlements have their chances divided by 8 too, just like Capital cities do.

newest cities don't usually have a religion. New religions ALWAYS go to "empty" cities first. Population, etc is effectively just a tiebreaker after "fewest religions" count for cities.

Well, usually my cities don't have a religion when I've founded my first one. When you say that population is the tie breaker, do you mean that the lowest populated city will found the religion? If so, that fits with my experiences.

They don't always go to cities without religions first. In one recent game, I founded the Runes of Kilmorph in my second city, which already had CoE and but was size 27, rather than the recently conquered size 2 city that was the only one with no religion.

I believe the number of religions already present has a much larger contribution that the total population, but a large enough population can still attract a religion to a city with more religions. In fact, I've managed to get all 7 religions in my capital city even after building another city or moving my capital around, in a game where I cheated to make my capital have a population of 999.

Good to know,

Usually my second founded city becomes the holy city, and that's usually the only city besides my capitol.

This game I'm playing I actually got a third city, a bad placement for a holy city so that's why I came to this topic with my answer.

The stated method in the first post is correct.
Capital was size 8, =1
Second was size 2,=2
Third was size 1.=1
no religions.

It became the second as it should be ^^

One thing I think should be removed for FfH is the capital block. I don't think it should get a bonus for religious spawning, but I think it should be just as valid as any other city...

In fact, Ahwaric made just that change for Orbis, and as of the last version I've imported that to FFPlus. ;)

I would like OO only to spawn in Cities close to the ocean.
