Which Civ for fastest route to Great Library?

2) I can change into a warmongerer...
3) Who cares, seriously?
I find that quite narrow-minded, since not everyone is a warmonger, and the cultural victory is not there for nothing.

The GL will make no difference on a 100K game, and 20K games are something totally different. And, yes, the cultural victory is there for nothing.

I'm sorry for the warmongering comment, but I think that anyone that avoids war like the plague isn't a full civ player.

I do try to avoid war, and I almost always manage to stay in the tech race on Deity (and sometimes Sid) without the GL.

I'm not saying that I avoid war like the plague. Perhaps I may not want to start battling just yet, using archers and swordsmen.

Yes, I agree that it is perfectly possible to stay in the tech race without the GL, I'm just saying that the GL makes it easier for you, and some people should stop having some kind of snobbish attitude that people who build it are weaker players (not accusing anyone, it's just a general feeling I get).

I once built the Great Library at a lunatic pace. I took the English which gave me Alphabet and then researched Writing. My city was stack with resources that boosted research. Achieving this gave me a great Scientific leader. I then research Philosophy which then gave me Literature and ANOTHER Great Scientist. I then built the Great Library. Through freak circumstances, my neighbour had gained Map Making, so then I built the GreaT Lighthouse with my other great leader and sent a boat out around all these islands.

Every move after that, I was deluged with tech as all the civs seemed to be researching different things.

Man I wish I knew how to trade successfully at higher levels. I'm not hooked on the GL and rarely go for it but I'm surprised it has such a poor rep among better players. For info, I am quite pleased if I can win an Emperor level game.

I realize that the OP in this thread is quite old, but for speed to get GL, I'd be looking to the Persians or Ottomans. Scientific gets you Alpha (if I remember correctly), and Industrious gets you quickly-built mines.

Naturally, this disregards the possibility of building with an SGL. If you get one of those, it doesn't matter which civ you're playing.

Commercial and Seafaring gives you Alphabet.

The GL has such a reputation, because in competitions like the HoF and XOTM, the players who fare the best basically never build it themselves. Also, if you try to build it and miss it, you have a lot of shields wasted. Experienced players seem to have the most use for it in AW games, or when moving up to a new level. You might find this article of interest.

That's cool, thank you.
